    Held in Contempt Chapters 1-4

”Counsellors!” the judge shouted to gain the attention of the two adversaries. ”Please approach the bench!”

The attorneys approached, contrite at the scolding they both anticipated from one of the most respected jurists in Los Angeles County.

”Ms. Kennard, you may not, in this or any courtroom, embark on a diatribe about ethical shortcomings, real or imagined, of your opposing counsel,” Judge Robinson began.

    ”Bitch,” Bette hissed.

”Enough!” the judge continued. ”Ms. Porter, your proclivity for swearing does not hold you in good stead with this court. If you two can’t keep your considerable emotions under control, I’ll let you cool your heels in a cell overnight because you’ll be found in contempt!”

”Up for a little jailhouse rock?” Tina glanced at Bette up and down with the most lascivious look she could muster.

”Judge,” Bette was stunned at Tina’s audacity. ”Sexual harassment!”

”Back away from the bench unless you want to spend the night courtesy of the county,” the judge said quietly.

”Yes ma’am,” Bette went back to the table where her co-counsel sat with the accused.

Tina silently returned to the prosecutor’s side, heart racing, and reached for a glass of water that she downed in repeated swallows.

”Ladies and gentlemen of the jury,” Judge Sarah Robinson announced. ”We are not going to be continuing with further arguments this afternoon. We will reconvene at 9 a.m., and hopefully cooler heads will prevail.”

She stood after striking the gavel and made her way out the door to her chambers.

Tina stuffed some papers into her briefcase and conferred with her colleague out of the earshot of anyone around them. He nodded over her shoulder to indicate they had company.

She turned and found herself face to face with Bette Porter. Her nemesis. The one defence attorney that she couldn’t seem to beat.

”I will report you to the law society if you offer one more comment like you made in front of the judge just now,” Bette said.

”What are you going to say? That I made vague reference to an Elvis song? Good fucking luck.”

”You’re just angry that you can’t beat me on a level playing field, so you’re trying to get me riled,” Bette charged.
”My record speaks for itself,” Tina replied, rolling her eyes. ”The D.A.’s office decides what to prosecute and I do my best to make the case with the evidence that’s been gathered. Who I come up against is immaterial to me.”

    1. Hi jks:
This is an excellent story, it is amazing, very well written, the plot is quite attractive and it hooks me up very easily, I haven’t read that story before, and even though you may post it with a different name, thank you so much for this gift.

    2. Well, as I’ve said before, I love reading your stories and this is one is no exception.

As a retired lawyer (UK) I love the setting and the dialogue.

Thanks for posting. Keep those chapters coming and I’ll keep reading!

      • Hopefully I don’t make it too unbelievable for someone who actually has training as a lawyer! I do not, I only have my imagination, and sometimes it takes me to places for plot purposes that stretch what could possibly happen in the real world. Thanks for letting me know you’re out there reading.

    3. A story that i defiantly recognize, but i still don’t know what your aliases are. But i think the site has just give me a clue, but to be sure i am gonna check it first.

I am happy that you have decided to post this story. Thank you for it.

    4. Great as usual. It does start off similarly to “Amicus Curiae” but then becomes quite unique. You still have that stellar gift of dialogue, snakiness and humor. Am anxious/excited for more.
