    Chapter 3

    Three months later …

Bette walked into the recording studio in Hollywood, CA where her half-sister Kit Porter was just finishing up a set. Kit was 12 years older than Bette and although she showed signs of a hard life her beauty was still apparent in the classic facial features she’d inherited from her mother; but the smile that broke out on her face when she saw her baby sister was definitely that of their father Melvin Porter. The famed Porter smile was one of the few physical characteristics of parentage that Bette and Kit shared since they each more resembled their respective biological mothers.

Kit was wild and rebellious in her youth. She left home at a young age to pursue her music career but soon fell victim to drug and alcohol addiction. In her early twenties Kit gave birth to a son David Waters but because of her dependence on drugs and alcohol she lost custody of the child to his paternal grandparents. David is now a successful pediatric surgeon working at a prestigious hospital in Boston, MA and while he and Kit are still estranged they have been making strides towards building a relationship.

Kit finally cleaned up her act a few years back and settled in Los Angeles to work on revitalizing her dying music career. Bette and Tina and their wonderfully supportive family of friends embraced Kit and helped her to get back on her feet. She credits the love and support of her sister and her current boyfriend and music manager Angus Partridge for helping to sustain five years of sobriety and giving her a new lease on life.

The sisters were brought closer together caring for their ailing father who died from advanced prostate cancer. Due to his refusal to have lifesaving treatment when first diagnosed he succumbed to the disease two years ago. As much as she would allow herself Bette leaned on Kit and Peggy; they were her touchstones. Peggy was gone for a year now and Bette had only spoken to her a few times. Since the calls were brief and sometimes the reception wasn’t the best she didn’t burden Peggy with any of her problems. She’d kept much to herself for the past several months but now she needed to talk to someone. She needed a shoulder and she knew her sister would provide a sympathetic ear, and the voice of reason. Kit turned on the outer microphone so the sisters could hear each other through the sound proof glass encasement.

    1. I love your story very much, though sad, it has lighted the debate in my mind about the insecurities and communication in the relationship of our couple; communication is a big part of their failure, Tina has closed herself in her own shell, maybe she is feeling guilty because her pregnancy efforts are not giving results, maybe she feels her partner is not giving her emotional support, maybe she feels Bette is not longer interested in her but just in the baby
And Bette is, just observing, apparently she doesn’t think she has anything to do with the catastrophic situation for which they are going through; she, apparently, already gave up on Tina, thinking the worst of her wife.
Each of them see, for her for own side of the story, they have lost perspective on their relationship and they don’t want to be in the other one shoes, we could say there is none so blind as the one who doesn’t want to see.
I’m thrilled, I want to read what will happen, how they are going to find their way back to each other, Thank you for this update and pps.

    2. Hey Bat, I know I read this story before but I can’t really remember the storyline, there are some bits and pieces I remember but I am not sure if I am mixing it with another story. But it’s all the better so I can enjoy you reposting this story. It’s really hard to stay neutral and to give Tina credit if Bette’s telling Kit about their problems and Tina’s behavior is correct. Don’t worry about any accusation on my part about your portrait of any of Tina or Bette. Looking forward to your next post.
