    Savannah – Amber eyes

Her heart thumped and its cadence echoed in her ears with a near deafening level.
"Bette.." she heard Tina’s frightened voice and felt her wife’s hand as it reached and touched her side.
The vet blinked quickly, the new coat of moisture over her eyes helping her to better focus  on the approaching lioness.
She took a deep steadying breath. The warmth on the walnut stock against her cheek was comforting. She would not let them come to any harm but deep down her heart already ached for the action she was about to take and at the same time she so dearly wanted to avoid.
The rifle was aimed directly at the wide chest of the animal. A single shot would be sufficient to tear through the ribcage and inflict a fatal wound.
    Precise and deadly.
The hunters had become the hunted. Those amber eyes had not wavered keeping their gaze on the occupants of the car.
Clenching her teeth in suppressed anger, Bette silently warned the lioness, "Don’t force me to do this .."
The animal swayed, her head drooping for the first time. It was brief but perceptible making Bette drop her stance for a split second, in hope, before she realised that the lioness had found her footing again, persisting on her path as she glared back at them defiantly.
The vet shouldered the rifle once more, squeezing the forestock tighter, aiming the sight and muzzle directly at the cat’s heart.
The renewed stand off was short lived though. The female slowed down, this time hindered by her now sudden uncontrolled staggering.
She was clearly puzzled at her own lack of coordination and the fact registered on her features. She looked helpless now realising that she was not going to win this battle.
She shook her head and tried to move forward but she had no control over that either.
Finally, she collapsed a few feet away from the car. The heavy body hit the ground in one muffled thud.
To the left of Bette, there was a deep sigh of relief, but the vet ignored it to climb out through the sunroof and down onto the bonnet to take a closer look.

    1. Woman, you certainly can tell a story. Absolutely awesome. Can’t wait for the epilogue. Hope you continue to write because you have such a wonderful gift for it. Thanks.

    2. Absolutely beautiful! Your writing is off the charts for me. I feel like I was right there in Africa. I can’t wait for you next Chapter…an epi maybe?? :) Thanks for bringing such amazing stories to us.

    3. omg…I know Bette wouldn’t pull the trigger….But somehow I had doubted her..not because she is afraid for herself. [in fairness, who wound’t?] more so of Tina being there. …I love everything in here Kins40.. ..your “Nc17” are wow…. always brilliant!… ..These are my fave lines..Just then, as Bette finished talking, two pairs of eyes re-appeared from behind a thorn bush which had just concealed them from view.Beautiful, mischievous and thankful to the women who had looked after them, they peered back for an instant, tiny little amber eyes glinting in the sunshine, before disappearing once more this time forever as another call resonated……Lions, as well as the Elephants.. …are a Mighty creatures… We have to respect them in any account.

    4. What, it’s over!!! You know I’m joking right? I recall it was almost a year ago that you brought us this original and beautiful B&T story. You my dear Kins are an AMAZING writer! Thank you for adding to my summer reading pleasure. Cheers – iHH (or should I say, iHeartKins? ;)

    6. Beautiful and loving story. Now that they have talked about having their own chidren after caring for the cubs for this period hopefully we will learn of their own little ones to come. You continue to give us a beautifully written story with detail like no other. You truly understand that detail makes the story and you do it so well. Looking forward to the epilogue. Thanks so much for giving us a wonderful story.

    7. Wow… Wonderful as usual, but this chapter was particularly emotional and sweet! I’ll repeat myself but will never say it enough, I love the intimacy that you, amongst very few people, know how to show between Bette and Tina. This is always perfect, and always leaves you with a warm and delicious feeling. Exactly what I needed for a long day ahead. You never fail to deliver your wonderful talent to us, my dear friend!!… Oh, and of course, this calls, shouts, yells, screams for an epilogue. But of course, knowing you, you know that already! Thank you so much for this amazing sequel, and looking forward to seeing you return with another wonderful and magic tale of yours! Lots of H&K, dear you! Kw
