    Savannah – Amber Eyes

Her stomach ached with its resounding emptiness. But she ignored it, Instead keeping incredibly still. Keeping incredibly quiet.
Her ears flicked and she breathed in the steady air of nighttime.
She was entirely surrounded by darkness, a usual occurrence when the pride was hunting.

She was ready, primed and prepared but her environment felt suddenly very limited. She was aware of her own presence in the space and this awareness only reached as far as a few feet on either side of her.
As usual they had taken advantage of the moonless night, the kind her family preferred when they prepared for the chase. She strained her piercing eyesight only able to penetrate the depth of the night, so far.

Still but not silent the darkness was abundant with sounds. The croaking of the frogs by the waterhole, the shrill whispers of the locusts in the long grass and the swishing tails of the herd somewhere in front helped the lioness make sense of her surroundings.

Secure in the knowledge that the total obscurity would keep her concealed, she crouched in the dry grass, her heart was thudding in her chest, tension building at the prospect of launching herself, almost blindly, forward.
She was still young but each successful hunt had filled her with a renewed sense of belonging as a fully contributing member of the family as well as inflating her confidence to the point where her sisters knew now she could be relied upon.
Panting quietly in the coolness of the night she closed her eyes momentarily  and she felt their presence nearby, the other females of the pride, crouched down similarly  around her.
And just like the young lioness, their attention was solely turned to the colossal herd of wildebeest huddled in the darkness ahead of them, the scent of their new born calves shuddering in the chill of their first night, filling the nostrils of the stalking cats.
The invisible threat hung heavily in the air and the herd sensed it. The weight of the night vision empowered eyes pressed on the skin of the mothers and a slow but perceptible uneasiness started spreading throughout the closely huddled wildebeests. Hooves scraped nervously at the ground, eyes widened hoping to detect the yet undetectable and young ones were recalled close by.
