    The Island – Answers

“I need answers now! If you can’t give me any, find someone who can!” Helena’s angry voice rips into the phone. She bangs the receiver on the table before slamming it back in its place. She plops into a chair and shakes her head, her body trembles with frustration. She is getting nowhere with the Costa Rican authorities. “They’re fucking useless. God, if anything happened to her…” She throws her head into her hands and uses every ounce of restraint to keep from bursting into tears. She feels guilty, scared and utterly helpless, all very new emotions for the usually strong and independent heiress.

“Helena, it’s not your fault.” Shane walks over to comfort her friend. She lays a gentle hand on her back and rubs softly. Helena looks at her gratefully, forcing herself to smile, but her insides are on fire. She hugs her middle, hoping to keep the contents of her stomach from exploding. The rest of the gang is watching her closely. They all sit impatiently in the hotel manager’s office after being summoned by a staff member. They’ve been waiting all day and night for word on their missing friend.

“I set her up with that shady little airline. I should have known better. Bloody hell!” Helena stands up quickly. She begins pacing the room. She stops and leans against a large antique desk, rubbing her tired eyes. She looks at the phone and frowns, as she contemplates calling the authorities again.

“Helena, it was the only plane available, you said so yourself. This resort is still new and it’s extremely private. They bring their guest in by boat so they don’t disturb the island. There is only one person allowed to fly here and they told us she is the very best. Tina will be fine! She’s in expert hands.” Shane smiles weakly, she’s just as anxious and scared. “And to be honest, I like it this way. It’s a secret paradise, completely preserved and unsoiled. It is the most beautiful place I’ve ever seen. It’s amazing.” Shane relaxes her shoulders when she sees Helena smile in agreement.

“So much for keeping this paradise a secret. Two more reporters just got off the boat.” Dana announces to the room. She’s been keeping an eye on the traffic outside. There are now several reporters, as well as police officers and hotel officials huddled in groups outside.
