Valentines Day
*BEEP* *BEEP* *BEEP*
Bette shot bolt upright in bed, blinking her eyes repeatedly to squint through the darkness at the emergency number on her pager, its red light flashing repeatedly, then it spoke to her through the silence in a crackly, inaudible voice.
“Dr Porter, Emergency, Delivery Suite Room 5 … Dr Porter … Emergency, Delivery Suite Room 5”
She shot out of bed, grabbing her shoes from underneath and shoving her feet rudely into them, another expensive pair that would last all of ten minutes the rate she raced around. She glanced at herself in the mirror on the wall as she flicked on the light, rubbing and pinching her cheeks to try and bring a little colour back into them, before stepping out the door and proceeding to dash with a galloping sprint down the long deserted coridoor.

“Hey,” Tina Kennard smiled as Bette entered the women’s changing room, the very person she’d been waiting for.
Bette returned the welcoming gesture, glad that it was Tina and not her incompetent junior who was doing the night shift with her, “Hey, what’s going on?”
“32 week primi,” said Tina, pulling her scrub top over a long sleeved shirt as she tossed aside her suit jacket. They’d both been at the same Valentines Day benefit for Heart Disease that evening, opting to crash out early and get a few hours sleep as two of the unlucky few who drew the short straw on call that night, “baby’s dipping and mom’s lost one before.”
Bette simply nodded, kicking off her shoes to one side, it seemed like the odds were against her for a quiet, stress free night.
Less than five minutes later and they were both standing by the same patients bedside, arguing over their next course of action with complicated words and abbreviations to mask the tension both felt.
“The decel’s are increasing,” Tina muttered frantically under her breath, “the baby could be hypoxic, we have to get him out.”
“Or, he could just be pressing on the cord,” replied Bette, less anxious, she had a certain feel for the serious obstetric cases, either way the baby would have to come out but the calmer they went about it, the better for all concerned.

OMFG Sofa I was thinking about you and Summer Vacation.Get the TBC out of there.How’s medical school treating you?I can relate to this story cause my mom is a nurse who works in the NICU.I don’t know how she does it and the cases she tells us about for the most part are horrible.This is a funny story. They had a man who had his wife and his mistress on different floors having his baby.I kid you not.PPS.As you know I am a Tibetter so make me happy.

I wss kinda thrown off by the kiss cause I thought Bette and Tina where together until Alice walked in on them. Bette and Alice is so wrong on so many levels. Even when they had that scene in season three with them at the opera I still can’t believe in them as a couple. I’m curious to where this is going and I don’t care who you ship. pps.

I am torn…i think you writing is great but I don’t know if I can handle a Helena and Bette combo when Tina is in reach…Yes I am a true Tibetter but I am ok with Bette dating Helena as long as Tina is not in the story.. Is that wrong.. I do wish we could have seen more of Alice Bette cause I think that is just way to comical.. ever seen two people more wrong for one another..

Sofa! So glad to see an update from you! It’s been a long time! A new love/medical drama posted on Hearts’ Day. Talk about perfect timing, huh? Is this your lezzie spin on “ER” (a great, compelling show, especially the earlier seasons, imo), “House” (it’s okay i guess but it has become predictable lately) or “Grey’s Anatomy” (Quite shallow imo)? But I was surprised by the Belena kiss. I don’t get that pairing, not even in fan fic. But just the same, thank you for this first chapter, sofa, and for breaking your silence. Hope you’ll get the chance to update “Summer Vaacation” too. I miss that story terribly. Thanks again and welcome back, sofa!!! :>

hehe…ok, i’m popping out of my uber-crazy-psycho-work mode to comment on this one. it made me smile. not just because helena and bette had that moment and not just because their moment of communication–neither right or wrong, just trying to connect–led to kissing…but all of that. i think your writing is getting even better with time and i think that the technical side of things is beyond great–i mean how would i f**’ing know any of that stuff???? so it’s super fun to read. i’d love to see McShaney get her dildo broken by some young doctor in the on-call room. lol. keep going with this story if you can, it’s great.
