    Her Guardian – Chapter 5

At 7:30am the next morning Tina’s cell phone rings.  It’s Bette.

    “Hello Bette” Tina answers.

“Good morning beautiful.  I didn’t wake you, did I?”

“No dear.  I’m on my way to school.”

“Ok good.  I just wanted to hear your voice this morning.”

Awwww.  “That’s a sweet thing to say,” Tina responds.

    “Hey T?”

    “Yeah.”

“Are your feet tired this morning?”

Tina pulls a face.  “No why?”

“Because you’ve been running through my mind all night.”

“Smooth Porter, very smooth,” Tina laughs.

“So I guess you’ll have your phone off at school?”

“I’ll have it on silent mode.  But I’ll check it.  How about you?  Can I call you at lunch?”

“Sweetheart you can call me anytime.  If I’m in a meeting, the phone is on silent.  If I’m on a rescue, it’ll be in the helicopter.”

“Ok.  What time are you off duty?”

    “Theoretically, 6pm.”

    “What do you mean?”

“If we get a rescue call late in the day, I never know what time I’ll be done.  The other day after you and Dana left and I went to that rescue, I didn’t get back until about 9pm.”

    “Oh.”

“Yeah, so it’s hard to make plans on the days I work.”

“Ok then let me say this.  I go to bed at about 11pm.  If you get out of work before that, I’d like you to come over tonight.  I’ll cook dinner.”  Tina remembered Bette’s comment about the way to her heart.

“Sounds great.  Let me call you later ok.”

    “Ok.  Have a good day.”

    “You too babe.  Bye.”

    Tina hangs up smiling.

She goes into the teacher’s lounge to find Dana.  She fills her in on the weekend’s happenings.

Our girls play phone tag a few times through the day.  Bette’s had one rescue and Tina’s been in parent conferences.  At 3:30pm Tina’s driving home.  She calls Bette.

“Hello gorgeous” Bette answers her phone.

    “Hi.  How’s your day?”

    “Just one call-out so far.”

    “That’s good right?”

    “Sure is.”

    “What about dinner?”

“Tina I can’t say for sure until I leave here at 6pm.  I’m sorry.”

    1. Love it. You are having them take their time and no one feels superior to the other. Neither is taking over the relationship which is great. Slow enough for us to be frustrated reading the story and slow enough for them to get it right the first time. Great chapter. PPS
