Nowadays, there can be so much more to being a fan of a particular show. Should you choose to participate, there’s the show’s home page, Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr and various message boards to share your love, or complaints. All of these add to our feeling of being connected to the show and characters. One could literally spend hours just indulging in these fun and interactive venues. It can even become a bit of an obsession and even more so if the cast and crew interact with the fans frequently. As I’ve said before, sci-fi has the added benefit of conventions to meet many of your favorite stars that adds even more to the fan-show connection.
With all these ways to become a part of your favorite fandom or celebrate your favorite ship, there is yet another form of fun that a fan could engage in that many of us agree can become quite addictive-fanfiction and fanart. It was around long before the internet and depending on your creative preferences or talents, you could lose yourself in this arena. I mean that in a good way. I can’t speak for other fandoms, but Lost Girl Faenatics are so friendly and helpful. It truly is like a whole other family and I’ve enjoyed the heck out of interacting with them on several venues.
As passionate as they are about the show and its ships, they really love their fanfics and fanart, too. You may even decide to try your own hand at one or both of them, which can lead you down a whole other road of fun. With Lost Girl being my first fandom and first exposure in this area (reading and writing), I asked several of my twitter followers and fellow writers/artists how they got started and why they enjoyed fan fiction/fanart. There are quite a few like me who fell so hard for Doccubus that they Googled the hell out of it and stumbled down the rabbit hole into fanfiction. Then there are the veterans who started with LWord, Buffy or Xena and have followed their various shows over the years. Those three still have hardcore followings even after all these years. The common theme is that they all have great female characters, even though depending on the year, there may not have been LBGT arcs in the stroies.
In my opinion, the best thing about Lost Girl in this form is that the show has five kick ass women with solid, recurring characters. They are not after thoughts or weaker than the male characters. This is a dream come true for Femslash lovers and ships abound, both real and fantasy here. The cherry on top is that there is plenty of visibility for the LGBT community in front of and behind the camera. Name another show that has that.
The answer to why they love it, well, that was overwhelmingly that they loved to see the characters in different situations than was allowed by the show, or to fill in the gaps left by the show. Everyone expressed that it was a way to feel connected to the characters/show and even served as an escape or helped them through rough times. Many enjoy the creativity of the writers and artists to put their own spin on the show. You can read about your fav LG character in the old west, as spies, war doctors, fire fighters, student/teachers, as a different Fae, human turned Fae queen, succubus impregnating lovers and so much more. Crazy, fluffy, angsty, sexy… it’s all there for you.
So, with all that to offer fans, whether it be Doccubus, Lenzi, CopDoc, Valkubus or even other pairings, I encourage you to stop in and take a gander. There’s a ton of talented folks out there sharing their love of Lost Girl and other shows. I’ve included some links for fanfiction and/or fanart to check out. So much good stuff to see and read, dive in and enjoy!

Note: Lost Girl has been very tight lipped on Season 5 so there is little to talk about, although the show is scheduled to debut back in Canada in September. I am headed to Dragon Con Labor Day weekend for my first in person look at the Lost Girl fandom and to meet the cast. I am beyond excited and hope to have plenty to share after, maybe even some show news.
