If you’re not watching Out with Dad web series, you’re missing out.
Out with Dad started as the story of high school aged Rose and her single father, Nathan. In it’s third “season” (which are less defined in the web series world), Rose is coming of age, and coming out of the closet. Dad wants to make sure Rose’s coming out is as easy and painless as possible. Sometimes he tries a little too hard.
Rose’s story is one that many of us will recognize – she’s a teenager who falls in love with her best friend, Vanessa. Vanessa isn’t sure about things – except that she has feelings for Rose. She comes from a really strict family. The girls go to Catholic school, so there are religious issues for Vanessa and her family. Rose struggles with Vanessa’s struggling, and Creator and Producer Jason Leaver delivers a realistic portrayal of two teenagers trying to figure out who they are, what family means, and where they fit in the world.
This is not a story just for adolescents. It’s a very mature look at coming out and homophobia, what happens to LGBT youth from different vantage points, and examines the roles of adults in their lives.
Having said that, Out with Dad is not at all preachy, dull, or boring. Rose’s self discovery is insightful and you feel the struggle, portrayed beautifully by Kate Conway.
Lindsey Middleton is brilliant as Vanessa. In Season 3, there is “Vanessa’s Story” – a separate video story about Vanessa’s struggles with family as she comes to accept who she is and what she wants. Middleton’s portrayal of Vanessa is gut wrenching and perfect.
Rose’s father is a single dad who lost his wife at a very young age. There is an ongoing storyline of how he reacts to re-entering the dating world and Rose’s reaction to that.
This is real life stuff with very honest, well portrayed stories of characters who are very likeable. Have a look at the Season 1 Highlights. Again, we’re in Season 3, but as the episodes are short, it doesn’t take a huge time commitment to catch up.
This summer, we will be hosting an Out with Dad Fanfiction Project with amazing input from Creator Jason Leaver and the cast. Catch up now, so you can join us! In the meantime, the fandom is ready – post fanfiction and simply select Out with Dad fandom.
Watch the entire series. You won’t regret it!
