Provincetown Women’s Week October 17 & 18, 2014 at Town Hall Provincetown, MA
Each year during Women’s Week, Provincetown Cares holds a staged reading as a benefit for women’s health services. This year, the play is The Secretaries. Each year, a play with lesbian themes – sometimes veiled – are chosen. Past plays include Last Summer at Bluefish Cove, Fallen Angels, Memorial, Pulp, The Women, and 5 Lesbians Eating Quiche.
Something’s rotten in Big Bone! Pretty Patty Johnson is thrilled to join the secretarial pool at the Cooney Lumber Mill under the iron-fisted leadership of sultry office manager Susan Curtis. But she soon begins to feel that all is not right—the enforced diet of Slim-Fast shakes, the strange clicking language between the girls, the monthly disappearance of a lumberjack. By the time Patty discovers murder is part of these office killers’ skill set, it’s too late to turn back! In the guise of satiric exploitation-horror, The Secretaries takes an unflinching look at the warping cultural expectations of femininity.
This year, Maureen Keiller (Fever Pitch,Proposal, Brotherhood), Georgia Lyman (The Town, RIPD, Bride Wars, Brotherhood), Kelly McAndrew (Smash, Good Television, Almost Maine), Hannah Yelland (Tony nominee Brief Encounter), and Darlene Van Alstyne (Rent, Ave Q,) will all be returning to Provincetown for the staged reading of The Secretaries.

It is out of a profound desire to honor the women we love that Provincetown Cares is dedicated to raising awareness and funds for women’s health through entertainment. As a part of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, each year we work to stage a benefit performance during Women’s Week in Provincetown, MA as a way to promote research, education, screening and treatment for breast cancer as well as other critical health issues affecting women.
