I have come to win your folks – (Chapter: Two)

    Chapter Two

“Mom! This is not fair! You never said anything about preparing dinner yesterday.”

“It’s common knowledge, Spencer. And besides, those are important guests and I want you home, not dallying around with that punk friend of yours.” Mrs. Carlin did not look at Spencer.

“Ashley’s not a punk!” Spencer fumed. “And why couldn’t you have asked Glen or Clay to help you?”

“Glen has basketball practice and Clay has to study for an exam. Your brothers, unlike you, have something concrete to do this evening.”

Spencer was about to open her mouth when Paula raised her hand to stop her.

“I don’t want to talk about this right now, Spencer.” Her firm voice removed any thought Spencer had of protesting. Short of jumping out of the moving car, Spencer saw no way out.

The rest of the drive was spent in silence. She did not respond to her mom’s efforts to make small talk. It was her own way of rebelling. Unfortunately, Paula wasn’t someone to be weakened by her daughter’s silent treatment. Plus, her mind was preoccupied with other thoughts. She was far away in her hospital.

The grocery shopping and the ride home went without event. As Spencer’s anger simmered inside her, she diverted her mind on more pleasant things. She thought about her first meeting with Ashley, their slow blossoming friendship and the last week when she realized that she was really in love with her best friend.

Spencer continued her recollection of all times spent with Ashley while she washed the vegetables. Paula noticed the odd wisp of a smile on her daughter’s lips from time to time. Even though she was very curious, she knew deep inside that her asking would break that look of content in that face. If Paula was honest to herself, she had to admit that she hardly ever saw her daughter like that.

“How’s Aiden?” Paula finally asked, when she could contain her interest no longer.

“What?” Spencer frowned at her mother, mildly irritated at the interference of her sweet memories.

“Aiden, that cute friend of yours. How is he?” Paula smiled at her daughter. She was shocked to receive an angry look back.

“He is fine. I’ll tell him you asked.” Spencer muttered.
