Why Superman Could Never Find a Phone Book – (Chapter: 37: Vignettes)

    Vignettes

    "Aiden"

The lights of the city sparkle like Christmas. He rests in the grass, his eyes staring straight ahead, behind dark glasses. The landscape behind him is dirty, eroding and decaying, as though conscious and sensitive to what is happening inside of him. His soul is buried deep beneath a pile of dirt, rock, and rusty bottle caps.

He finds himself here. This place has always been a location of change for him. Things are born and die here. Tonight is no different.

    ‘What have I become?

    My sweetest friend?’

She had sat with him on the hill. They don’t talk; just stare out onto the city. She glances over hesitantly, at his chiseled face and thick chin. She is worried about him. He has been so distant, as if something inside him is changing, even at this very moment, his insides constructing a new entity, only to knock it down dissatisfied, and rebuild again.

He senses she is watching him. He knows now is the time. Their connection must be severed; he knows it is the only way. He has tried, so many times, to cut the cord, but the line won’t break, the threads becoming impenetrable the second he gazes into her dark eyes. He needs her to flee, to end it.

She places a hand on his knee.

He lets her, knowing what he must do. The words rise to the edge of his throat at the back of his mouth. He means them, all of them. Yet, they are not his words. He had just stared at them, memorizing them, digesting them, repeating them over and over in his head.

He just needed to know who she wants him to be.

They had flowed from her heart into her fingers and onto the page of her notebook; meant for someone else; someone that was not him. Thoughts she did not want anyone to read, least of all him.

When she hears him speak, she will know. The betrayal and hurt and pain will force itself upon him. She will want to know why. Why he lied, betrayed her trust, invaded her inner most thoughts and secrets.

She turns to him, concerned, her hand reaching for his sunglasses. His hand raises and stops her, holding her fingers in his before letting them go.
