    Turning the Handle, Part 1

Arm in arm, the striking pair made their way to the waiting car. Dana and Lara were officially beginning their first date.

The brief kiss on the front steps had calmed Dana’s nervousness a bit. She reached for
the door handle of the car to let Lara into the frontseat. As she bent forward, her head knocked the door’s frame.

“Ouch.” She exclaimed. Dork, dork, dork – how can a professional tennis player lack this much coordination? What must Lara be thinking of me now? Does she want to run screaming back to her apartment? The little confidence she had bolstered waned even further as she rounded the rear of the car.

Lara grinned to herself as she watched Dana talk to herself from the side mirror. Geez – that woman rocks my world.

Inhale – Exhale. Dana plopped herself not so gingerly into the driver’s seat. Her hand twitched as she aimed the key for the ignition. As she reached to shift the car into gear, Lara placed her hand on top
of Dana’s and lit the car’s interior with a dazzling smile. Dana’s heart flip flopped in her chest and she returned the smile. Wow – that woman is amazing.

They talked for hours over wine and dinner. The conversation was easy. Tennis, cooking, the country club . . . At some point, someone was going to have to pry the
smile off of Dana’s face with a crow bar.

Too bad the waiter kept interrupting them and just because it was closing time, he had the audacity to bring the check to signal time for them to leave. But Dana didn’t want this night to end.

    What to do?

Could they go back to Lara’s? Should she suggest a walk? This night had to continue. All the way to the car, she mulled a plan for even one more minute with Lara.

“Do you want to .” “I had a great time” Dana and Lara spoke on top of one another. “You go first” came out in unison. They giggled. Lara started again with “I had a great time tonight. You are incredibly beautiful and . . .” Dana decided it was now or never
and leaned in, took Lara’s hands in hers and pulled their mouths together. The kiss was spectacular, teasing, taunting, tingling.

Dana was consumed with the feelings coursing through her body. It was no longer possible to think, only to act and react. She
had to have more, but wait, what if Lara wasn’t feeling the same way? What if she had been about to say thanks, but can I go home now?

Dana retreated to her side of the car – visibly shaken. She looked at Lara trying to read her. She waited – should she apologize? Had she taken the situation for granted. “I am sor . . . ” “No” – Lara whispered placing a finger over Dana’s mouth. “Shhh, You aren’t going to do this again. I like you – love the feel of your lips on mine, the way you touch me. It is amazing”.

“Where would you like to go?” Dana softly breathed in the moment.

“Take me home, Dana. Come in for a drink, we’ll talk, relax and enjoy the rest of the
    evening..”

“oh, o k, that sounds good.”

The drive to Lara’s was nearly silent save for the hum of the tires and a soft music Dana could not have identified if she had to. Lara’s hand rested gently on Dana’s thigh – the heat seared her leg through her
jeans. Sexual tension, energy reverberated though the car.

“Are we there yet?” played over and over in
Dana’s mind. The problem was she was unclear of exactly how far she wanted to take things tonight.

As she had told Alice from Lara’s door – this was only their first date. Lara made it clear that she wanted to set the right tone for “us” and Dana was not ready to ***** it up.

“Uh, Lara – not to be too geeky, but . Uh, ummm. Can we just talk tonight? I mean I want to come in and all, but errr I want to take this a bit slow.” She turned her face away from Lara – listened to the words
in her head, cringed and then quickly added “not that I don’t want you, it’s not that.”

“Shhhh”, Lara reached across the car and caressed Dana’s face. “I understand.” Lara smiled at Dana, pressed a slow, soft kiss on her lips. “Come in, we’ll turn on the tv. Let me hold you for a little while and then you can go home. Please.” Dana was lost at the please – and she wanted the evening to continue too much to refuse.

Inside the apartment, Lara turned on some show. Could have been the Home Shopping Network for all Dana cared.

“Can I get you something to drink?”

“No I am ok” Man – how awkward and off was this, Dana thought, but then Lara stroked Dana’s shoulder, down her arm. All the awkwardness disappeared.

Lara took Dana by the hand and led her to the couch. Dana stumbled over something, but recovered quickly. She looked up in time to see Lara’s quick smile and reassuring eyes. Somehow Lara managed to make Dana’s
    clumsiness seem cute, almost inconsequential.

They curled up on the couch – Lara holding Dana in her embrace. She stroked her arms, kissed her neck, drew in the scent her. Dana purred, snuggled into Lara’s enveloping arms and with little fan fare, fell asleep.

    The end?
