    New Territory – Part 9

It was daylight now and Marina was waking from the drug-like daze her lover had cleverly presented her. Jenny lies next to her facing away and Marina turns to cradle her kissing the side of her neck, little soft kisses, on her ear, her cheek, under her chin. Marina glides her hand gently along her side and hips and back again. She slides her hand tenderly across her stomach and her *****. Jenny wakes startled and with a sudden jump moves away from her staring in disbelief, Dont.

Her mouth moves but no words are coming out. Finally they begin to form but jumbled, I just thought you… we

No No Jennys eyes are almost foreign to her.

Marina got out of bed, stopped, facing away from her, I didnt do this to you. She turns to her, her words no longer soft but firm and insistent that Jenny hear her. You didnt do this to you. He did. Hes who is wrong. Not me, and, not you. Theres no blame for us.

Im going to The Planet today. She showers and prepares to leave, thoughts racing from disillusionment to disappointment and finally back to understanding. Dressed and walking out the door, she knows she must say one more thing, Jenny, I know you’re in pain right now, it won’t last forever. You survived, that is your victory. We will survive, I believe that. We need you, to believe that.

    ****************************

Thats what the counselor keeps telling me, Im the winner, I survived. Well grow beyond it. So why, why cant I stand the idea of her touching me. Marina loves me, I love her. Why does he haunt me, us?

I made love to her this morning. I enjoyed touching her, watching her enjoy me touching her. What did she say, what was it the counselor asked me? How do you think she feels about this? I dont know, she hasnt told me. I havent asked her.

    ****************************

She sits staring at the door from within the car. The distance seems far, the journey difficult. She breathes deep, I can do this for us.

Slow deliberate steps, one then another, her chest fills with fear but she goes on, one step at a time, stopping in front of the door. She stands sensing all the people around her, surrounding her, threatening her breath with their presence. The door opens and standing before her, is a woman, a blonde woman only a few years older than herself, Jenny, its good to see you. Weve missed you, Ive missed you. Do you wanna come in?

Yes. Yes, I do. Tina steps to the side holding the door for her as she carefully steps inside.

Do you want to say hello to everyone? Marina is in the office. Its okay Jenny, were very proud of you, youre so strong and brave.

Marina. I want to see Marina. Tina walks beside her to the office door. Jenny opens it and walks in.

She looks about for a moment, not seeing what is there now, but what was there in the past. The times they talked here, the times they made love here. Love, it was love and it was wonderful.

Marina watches the thoughts run past her eyes, wondering what Jenny is seeing, remembering. Waiting for a cue from her, anxious to know what courage enabled her to come here, what need gave her that strength.

Jenny sees her and sighs, We made love here a lot Marina doesnt speak, but eyes shift from fearful wanderings to soft warm remembering.

Marina dont leave me. Ive been afraid, and I know I have to be strong.

Jenny, you are strong, so strong. I am so proud of you, how courageous youve been.

Tears welling in her eyes, as she stand there unable to move, listening. Listening to her Marina, her soft consoling speak, her soft lips moving, eyes wide and sincere.

It was an awful thing he did, but you survived and youve moved forward claiming your life back. I understand your anger, Im angry too. Your sadness and your pain… I wont leave you, I love you, I want you in my life. Jenny reaches out her arms to her, pleading with her eyes for Marina to come to her. She does.

Gentle are her movements as she rises out of the chair, never breaking their look, towards her. Tenderly she brushes the hair back from Jennys face looking deep into her eyes. Jenny throws her arms around Marina, and Marina holds her tenderly to her. Jenny kisses the side of her face again and again edging ever closer to her lips.

Marina tenderly returns her kisses working cautiously towards hers. They kiss soft kisses, each longer than the one before. Then the kiss became long and tender, heart speaking to heart. Jenny begins once again to kiss her cheek, her neck and Marina returns in kind, her passion growing, her need to give her love to Jenny. Jenny accepts her.

Their words are comforting and encouraging to the other. Desperately they find the path home, together.

We must share our feelings honestly and openly with respect and compassion

sometimes it feels like Im letting my guard down

    when Im with you

    I knew

    these things frighten me…

    it wont last forever.

Another week passes, their comfort with intimacy growing, their bond mending. That final step that long arduous frightening step had been taken. Remembrances of happy times reclaimed, they truly had found their way home. The time had come, at last, to heal.

Busy about the kitchen fixing their Thursday night dinner, Jenny asks, Did you see our latest letter from your most ardent admirer? Amuras first day at school. Smiling, remembering their young friend, their youthful confident.

I was thinking, her drawings go with a lot of my writings I did while we there. What would you say about using them as illustrations in a new book?

Marina stops, Jenny that would be a great idea. I love it, you should do it.

She could use any monies from it for school, maybe a Montessori would be good for her, if Temaru and Poema agreed of course. I guess thats really up to them, but it would be good to know they have the choice to make.

Marina had already gone to get the scrapbook, Jenny, look at this one, its my favorite, beautiful in its innocence and she always uses such vibrant colors. I think you could do this, I do.

So do I, smiling looking very pleased with herself, I miss her, she always made me smile. Watching, you and her working together, made me smile. Wed never been around children before and I think I fell deeper in love with you, watching you with her. You were very good together.

Marina nodded, eyes glistening from the loving tears welling up, I miss her too.

Cant you almost imagine us as a family? I mean she looks like you. You even said that she reminded you of yourself when you were small.

I have pictures, of when I was small. I should find them and show you.

Marina, theres something I havent told you. Something you should know and we should talk about.

    ****************************

T, you will be my date at the HRC dinner, wont you? I mean, you have time right?

I wouldnt miss it for anything. Im happy to hear Jenny will be coming. She actually called me the other day. She wanted to talk over something she has to tell Marina. Something Id like to talk to you about, an idea for a backup plan.

    ****************************

The HRC dinner, being held Saturday evening at the Beaulieu Vineyard, is where Marinas mural was to be displayed. The evenings purpose was to raise monies and centered on one of the HRCs primary goals of helping change hearts and minds.

Everyone was there at their round table, happy to be out, together. They were chatting about the happenings in each of their lives, pleased that Jenny was there and participating.

Anyway, Marina has been to three book signings now and Tuesday we go to our first one together. It seems were slowly becoming popular at least in L.A. which is good enough for me right now, smiling with a knowing look, but also a look of hope in her eyes.

Shes giving a speech tonight. Can you believe she wouldnt even let me look at it. She was afraid I would want to edit it.

Can I tell them? Jenny grins at Marina, nodding wanting her to give her the go ahead. Marinas eyes, although smiling, were questioning her.

Oh Im going to. I have a new book, well, Im working on one. Its a collection of thoughts about loving relationships between women and families. Now heres the really cool part, our young friend from Moorea, Amura, is going to be the illustrator. Isnt awesome! We called and her parents are excited, of course Amura is excited. Shes already working on her next set of drawings. Too cute dont you think.

Jenny, theyre going to start, Marina sighs. Shes excited and nervous all at the same time, she had never spoken in front of this large a crowd and never about such an important subject and at such a personal level. They would soon call her to the podium. They wanted to unveil her mural early in the evening with pomp and circumstance.

a painter, a writer, and the owner of our very own West Hollywood caf, The Planet, Ms. Marina Ferrer, everyone applauded, the girls all beamed with pride as Marina stood up from their table. Jenny held her hand as she stood, Marina leaned to kiss her before going.

Marina gracefully bowed and thanked everyone for honoring her, teasingly warned that they hadnt seen it yet. She proceeded, a theme centered on changing hearts and minds wanted to show the diversity of our families and extended families help from a young Polynesian girl, Amura, I was able to and with inspiration from my partner, Jenny dedicated to the HRC to be displayed here in their L.A. office until sold

Three young men walked up to the 8 x 16 mural, hanging from the ceiling of the banquet room, and removed the covering. Jenny sat with hands across her mouth, she knew what they were about to see, the emotions inside her surged with happiness for Marina.

There was silence, complete silence. Marina with her back to crowd, looked upon her own work for the first time since packing it, remembering that place where this had emerged. Tears filled her eyes.

Alice suddenly started clapping, breaking first her own trance and then the crowds. It was a contagious reaction as people began standing up as they applauded, tears falling from many of their eyes. Marina had found that place within in each of them, their vision of hope, of love.

The mural of vivid colors like that of the sunsets and moonlit nights on Moorea, in a mix much like the floating garden witnessed at their union, bound by the soft blended swirls of turquoise waters and white beaches. Multiple settings of lovers embracing, families holding hands, families building and working together, all vibrantly alive captured in Marinas own version of Matisse and Gauguin.

It was apparent the next speaker would not be coming up anytime soon. The crowd moved slowly closer to the mural, wanting to be part of it, wanting the moment to linger for as long as possible. The girls all made their way through the crowd to Marina. It wasnt easy getting to her, everyone wanted the chance to tell her how mesmerized how pleased they were to see it.

Shane is the first to get to her, deliberate and steady in her approach. She stopped beside her, both gazing at it, Pretty ***** awesome. Marina laughed at the familiar speak of her friend, put an arm around, turned and kissed her forehead.

Jenny was the last, with the exception of Tina who had walked with her helping the smaller woman get through. She walked to the opposite side as Shane, touching Marinas waist with both hands, her arm came immediately around Jenny. Looking down into the eyes of her hearts desire, One more unveiling tonight and then we can relax.

About that time, one of the hosts started talking over the speaker, Ladies and Gentleman, if I may have your attention please. One moment please The mural has been sold at triple the asking price.

Triple, who would do that, thats a huge offering, a huge donation. Hey Marina, seeing how Im your friend and all, you gonna give me an interview for the mag.

Well, I suppose I could, grinning, all of them grinning. They are amazed at their friend, this woman who ran The Planet. Always there to greet them, serve them. Always there to listen, comfort them. This woman who they believed nothing more than the owner of The Planet as an avenue to actively pursue women had proven to be a hidden treasure an incredible mystery uncovered.

    ****************************

The gentleman who had announced the sale came over to speak to Marina. He spoke only briefly naming the buyer. Marina was stunned paralyzed by the name. Jenny asked what was wrong, Marinas face blank of expression, He told me who bought the mural.

Cool, who was it? Marina, tell me who it was?

    My father.
