    The Brakes

Dana Fairbanks bolted up in bed and stayed very still as they both listened to the building knocking on the door. Who could it be? Who knew she was there? Had she been followed? Had Catherine been followed? Had Catherine planned this? Was this a part of the game or was someone really at the door?

    Dont answer it. Dana breathed.

It wont answer itself. Catherine got quickly dressed and made her way to the door. Maybe its room service.

    We didnt order.

    Are you sure?

Theres no room service in this shithole! Dana snapped and Catherine brushed her shoulder tenderly with her hand as she passed her.

Im sure its nothing. She smiled and then called out to the knocker and Danas heart dropped when the knocker replied. Do you want me to let her in?

NO! Dana jumped off the bed and quickly gathered her clothes and made it to the door. It will just take a second. She assured taking a deep breath.

What is going on? Alice got pushed farther away from the room as Dana exited and abruptly closed the door behind her. Alice tried peering in and caught a glimpse of Catherine walking back to the bed. Who is that?

Howd you find me? Dana crossed her arms and stood nervously guarding the door.

You left matchbooks to this rat trap all over my house. Alice shifted weight trying to see in through the faded curtains. When did you start smoking?

I dont smoke. Listen, did you need something? Alice was shocked.

Do I need something? Dana, have you lost your mind? Whats going on here? Whats all the cloak and dagger for? Whos in there? Alice relentlessly followed Danas evasive eyes.

Can we talk about this tomorrow?

No, we cant talk about it tomorrow.

Are you in some kind of trouble? Dana exhaled tiredly and stepped forward into the moonlight. Oh my God, is that blood? Alice covered her mouth in horror. It is blood! She stepped back and noticed that Danas clothes, hands and face were bloody. Dana kicked herself hard, the one most important thing she forgot to do was clean up and now shed have to tell Alice, shed have to tell her everything. Did that woman hit you?

No, its not like that. Alice, I just cant talk right now.

No, you will talk right now, youre coming with me and if you dont, Im calling everyone else and well all force you out of here.

    Im fine here.

    You need a doctor.

She is a doctor. Alice shook her head.

***** this *****! She pushed through Dana and opened the door. Catherine stood calmly with a drink in one hand and a lit cigarette in the other. Alice froze in her subliminal eyes and hesitated before speaking. I dont know who you are or whats going on here but stay from her. Dana tried to speak but Alice cut in and grabbed her arm and pulled her out of the room.

Dana couldnt even muster the nerve to turn back around and face Catherine, she felt embarrassed, exposed and foolish. How would she ever understand the bond she had with her friend? How without testing that friendship will she ever know how serious she is about her?

The car ride back to Danas house was silent for the first twenty minutes and both women sat listening to some of the worst mainstream hits currently available, both trying to avoid each others immediate proximity.

Make me understand Dana. Alice finally said penetrating dead space and inviting a conversation she would soon regret having.

    I cant.

Look at you. Alice glanced over at the dried blood covering her. Is it all yours?

    No.

Goddamnit! Will you just tell me what happened? Did she force you?

    To do what?

Whatever it is youve been doing. Alice tried to remain calm. What were you doing? Is it S&M? Some kind of rough *****?

    Not entirely.

What the ***** does that mean?

Thats not how it started. Dana rubbed her tired eyes. I just dont feel like talking about it.

Well youre welcome Dana. Really. I thought you were in some kind of trouble.

    I told you I wasnt.

Fine, then Ill just turn the ***** back around and drop you back off and you can continue your bloodbath! She snapped and as an added measure of believability she began to slow down as if seriously contemplating making a U-Turn.

I met her when I tore that ligament a few months ago. Danas voice was exhausted.

    Why didnt you tell me?

I did. Alice searched her mind frantically.

Thats the doctor? Dana shook her head yes. But you said she was wonderful.

    She is.

Have you taken a look at yourself? Youre covered in blood and the only reason Im not taking you to the police is because I still dont know how voluntary this was.

    It is voluntary.

    But why? And what?

I left my car back there.

    Dana. Alice pressed.

It happened by accident one night. Remember I was going to introduce you to her but you had that thing and so we stayed in and I dropped a wine glass and it shattered all over the floor. Dana spoke while staring out the window and she let out a small laugh in remembering. I felt so stupid! Im so clumsy but she didnt care. She bent down with me to pick up the shards and I cut my index finger really bad on one of them and she inspected it carefully and when she deemed it wouldnt require a stitch, our eyes met and she pulled my hand slowly up to her mouth and licked the blood off. Dana glanced over at Alice who sat mortified. That opened something inside of me that I didnt know was there and then she stopped to see my reaction and I suddenly kissed her and I tasted my blood in her mouth and I never got so turned on in my life. Dana gained confidence as she heard herself speak aloud. There wasnt a lot of blood, like tonight but enough and I sucked what I could out of it and baited her with a kiss again and when she did it the second time, it ran down our chins and the warm taste of iron consumed me and I let her go down on me in the kitchen and

Okay! Alice felt uncomfortable and interjected before Dana forgot she wasnt alone in the car. Lets go back to what you said earlier. Dana was confused. About the glass breaking?

Yeah. She cleared her throat. Now, how the ***** do you go from breaking a glass to letting her drink your blood?

I told you how it happened.

No, Dana you told me what happened. I just dont ***** know how it happened. How do you go from getting cut to feasting on someones blood? I get cut all the time around people and no one has ever swarmed over me to taste it. What was going through your head?

    I dont know.

    She made you do it.

You know thats not true. Dana said seriously as Alice broke from her glare. She drew me in like a beacon. She added quietly.

Explain it to me Dana, I just dont understand.

You date men and I dont understand that. Alice pulled in front of Danas house, stopped the car and faced her with a look of astonishment.

Dont even compare that to this okay, thats just ***** ridiculous.

Thats how I feel about it to.

Dana dont turn this around. Dating men is not the same as drinking someone elses blood.

I didnt drink her blood that night.

What? You mean you have? Alice let out a loud sigh. You didnt know the woman, you didnt know what she could have been carrying.

It didnt matter at the time, it was urgent.

Thats nowhere near what Id call it. Her reply was sarcastic. Its dangerous, stupid and weird.

She brought me out of the coffin.

Thats it! Alice slammed her fists down on the steering wheel. Youre not seeing her again and I have just the person for you to talk to about this.

Forget it, I wont. Dana crossed her arms. I havent done anything wrong.

Yes, you have, youre engaging in something that could hurt you.

    Its just bloodplay.

Who are you! Alice snapped. What is going on with you and whats with these fucked up words? Its not helping me understand anything.

Well maybe thats because you cant understand anything.

    Thats not fair Dana.

I dont know why youre being like this. She stated flatly.

Well sorry if I dont think that drinking someone elses blood is sheik.

Unless you try it you wont ever know.

No, now thats bullshit! I dont even order meat medium rare okay, blood makes me squirm and the thought of doing what you do is just disgusting to me.

So Im disgusting to you. Alice kept her hands on the wheel and stared blankly ahead. Is that what youre saying?

    You are covered in blood.

Okay get past that, I have.

Obviously. Alices sarcasm was hurtful and it triggered Dana to unlock the door and to get out. Dana, Im just worried about you! She called.

No, youre not. She exhaled tiredly. Youre just not being a friend. She slammed the door shut and fumbled for her keys as she walked to her front door. Alice remained in the car too stunned to make a decision and too selfish to offer an apology.

The house rang silent when Dana entered it and she stood motionless behind the door for a moment before welcoming routine. She could hear Alice igniting the car engine and the headlights briefly flashed across the living room as she sped quickly away.

Danas night fell on her chest like a demon taking a rest from the labor of tormenting her dreams. She felt her cat rub up against her legs and curiously sniff at her clothes. She extended a warm hand and smile down at it and dropped her keys in a small dish, which sat on an elongated entry table.

For most people a shower would have been paramount but for Dana it was the last thing on her mind. She sat on the floor next to her phone and stroked her cats soft fur and thought about everything but that night. She thought about the irrelevant. Things she did in childhood and early adolescence. Awards she won, trips she took, games she played and anything that would distract her from accepting a responsibility she wasnt strong enough to carry on her own.

Blood in the moonlight appears black and it was a comfort to Dana to be able to see it that way and not for what it was. It was like a second skin and the feeling of it was intoxicating and when she did wash it off, the cuts would still be there, the scars would soon follow and it would stay forever like Catherine did in her bloodstream. It was an unsurpassable feeling, a baptism into a secret that was now in jeopardy.

What was she going to do? Would what she revealed make her blood bond with Catherine vulnerable? Would she be able to fight for it? To stand up for it? To defend an accident? And is it love if she did? After all, isnt that what everyone does at some point in their lives? Accidentally fall in love and then have to defend that accident?

Was she any different than anyone else? Would gaining this insight take away from common sense? Would Catherine do the same for her? Has she already? Would it matter to her? Would she too lose everything to keep just one thing alive?

Like most decisions in life, Dana would have to come before the sword, before the garden and there was no way around that. She wiped a tear away from one of her eyes and as the phone began to ring, she heard raindrops begin to fall against the windows.

She picked up the phone and remained silent.

    I know youre there.

    I shouldnt have answered.

    Im worried about you.

Thats a first. Dana scoffed. Thanks for fighting for me.

Ripping you out of the arms of your friend was not a logical move and you know that. It would have backfired.

I would have respected you at least. Danas voice was distant and the pause that followed seemed like an eternity.

If you werent so upset, Id think that you were trying to hurt me. Catherine offered comically and it put Dana at ease. Shell come around, Dana.

    How do you know that?

If shes your friend she will. Shell see that youre not in any danger. That. She abruptly stopped.

That what? She teased. That were in love. Shell see that were in love, right?

    Yes.

Say, yes that were in love.

    Yes, were in love.

Say, yes Im in love with you.

Yes, Im in love with you. Dana couldnt help but smile into the phone. Do you still want me to do it?

Do you want me to? Catherines voice sounded smoky and relaxed.

You said not more than one stitch right?
    Thats right.

And this is the real thing? Its from the Nineteenth Century?

Yes. Catherine affirmed. I paid over five thousand dollars for it. And that was a deal, in most circles it can climb as high as fifteen. Dana exhaled nervously on the other end. You do trust me dont you?

    Of course I do.

    Nothing will go wrong.

You can fix it if does?

I would do more than fix it, I would make it right. Catherines words traveled through Danas ears, down into her mouth, slowly sliding down her throat, into her lungs and with one large inhale she consumed the idea whole. And in that instant, her heart grew and her mind began to turn with an irresistible desire to join the perils of the night hour.

    1. Nothing like starting out intense and jacking it higher. This is a great series, Tiger. Keep it going, please. The whole Alice/Dana conversation was so well done, too. This is really fascinating darkness.
