    CHAPTER TWENTY FOUR, Part Two: White Flag of Surrender

    “Miss Tina? Excuse me Miss?”

     

    Tina shook herself free from her thoughts and turned to face the man who was looking at her through the rearview mirror. She hadn’t even realized that the limo wasn’t moving, they hadn’t left the set.

     

    “Where to Miss Tina?” Jonathan, her assigned driver from the estate, asked politely.

     

    Tina swallowed hard and looked down at her lap. Indecision was waging a war inside of her. But she knew she had to make up her mind. Where to now? She had to make a choice. She sighed and raised her head. She just hoped that this was the right one. “Jon, take me to..”

    The Porter Regency Lodge, Snowmass Village.

    Aspen, Colorado.

     

    She had expected more.

     

    Standing here at the sidelines, watching the contract signing unfold, she exhaled deeply and acknowledged the thought that yes, she had expected more.

     

    This occasion, as auspicious as it was, deserved more fanfare. A bit more drama. A little more flair. Bette Porter let her chocolate brown eyes sweep through the small conference room, scrutinizing everything and everyone in it. She allowed herself a sigh of displeasure for the plainness and dullness that she saw. Yes, she really believed that this thing should’ve had more oomph to it. It was just too bad that her father thought otherwise. And much to her chagrin, so did William Grisham. The two powerful tycoons wanted the momentous event as simple and solemn as it could be. They ditched the over-the-top plans presented during the numerous planning meetings held before this day, gave a thumbs down to all discussions about turning the contract signing into a big business world spectacle. They were at the top of their game, and unlike smaller companies, they did not need to resort to silly stunts just to create a buzz. What’s the point when whatever they did would get talked about regardless? With this in mind, both CEO’s scowled at the idea of doing it in front of an audience comprising of a hundred representatives from various branches of the famous hotel chain. They wanted to set an example in these trying times and practice austerity. After all, they already had a big press conference scheduled right after the contract signing, and after the expected media frenzy that would ensue, the businessmen and women from both companies would rest and recuperate before meeting again at dinner – during which a celebratory party would be held in honor of the birth of the Porter-Grisham Regency Hotels. To Melvin and William, that was enough.
