Short Story 6, Chapter 3: Taking chances

    Los Angeles, Present Day

Tina got to the Planet long before their meeting time. She still couldn’t believe that she was about to see Bette again. She ordered her usual latte and looked around to see if Kit was in today. She saw Bette’s sister talking to one of the baristas and tried to get her attention.

“Oh, hi Tina. Give me a second, honey.”

Tina nodded and sat down at her favorite table. She always felt so fortunate that even after Bette broke up with her, Kit was still treating her like a family. Tina was surprised that Kit didn’t mention Bette coming back into town but she understood about loyalty. If Bette asked Kit not to say anything, Kit would keep her promise.

A few minutes later Kit joined her at the table. “What a crazy morning. Have one barista call in sick, some supplies were delivered late, and one of the espresso machines decided to stop cooperating.”

Kit chuckled and shook her head. “How are you, Tina? You look all serious. Big meeting at work today?”

    “Bette called last night.”

“Oh…” Kit covered Tina’s hand with hers and sighed. “Sorry I didn’t tell you she was back, honey. Bette made me promise not to say anything.”

“It’s okay, Kit. I know.” Tina took a sip of her coffee and asked shyly, “How is she?”

“Well, you know Bette. She always has to be so strong, so independent. And she is very stubborn and hides well how she really feels.”

“Yes, I do know her,” Tina smiled, thinking about the time they had together. “After all this time, I think I still do.”

    Three Years Ago: Tina’s narrative

I had to admit, Solange could be very persuasive. Nothing could stop her from getting what she wanted. I would be happy just to stand there and stare at Bette but Alice intervened so she could talk to Bette for a moment. They walked to a more quiet corner to have a short interview and Solange jumped right back into my personal space.

    1. Thanks for the posting. I really enjoy your writing. The storyline is very realistic and I’m enjoying the journey from looking at life with the influence of fear to being brave and stepping outside of oneself and being brave to take a step forward and taking risks. Thanks.
