    Chapter 18

“Have you ever thought of quitting?” Tina asked next.

“Once… we were called to provide assistance to a small team of profilers that were not from the Bureau. Actually it was here, in New York… ever heard of The Reaper?”

“You mean the serial killer that terrorized this city five years ago? Of course I remember him”

“Well, as you surely remember she specialized in children, we came along and stayed for almost a month until we caught him but let me tell you… it was the hardest thing I ever endured… I seriously considered resigning”

“And what kept you from doing so?” The blonde asked truly curious, since she would have been long gone if she had seen a quarter of what Bette had probably seen.

“Dana and Shane… see they had joined the team recently and I knew then that those two were special, that we would be become like a family… I couldn’t miss on that, and I also knew that I wouldn’t be able to properly sleep at night if I left in the middle of the investigation, before we caught that bastard”

“I envy your courage” Tina honestly said and Bette just smiled tenderly.

    “I envy yours”

“Has anyone ever told you that you’re just…” Tina stopped right there, seriously considering on blocking what she was about to say.

“I’m just what?” Bette asked after a few seconds, noticing the blonde wasn’t making any eye contact.

“One of the nicest people I’ve had the chance to meet” Tina replied with nothing but honesty and warmth in her voice.

Bette simply smiled, somewhat touched by the blonde’s sincerity.

“Now I know you’re lying” The brunette replied amused.

“Why would you say that?” Tina asked also smiling.

“Because I’ve been called many things, and I don’t recall “nice person” being one of them”

“Well maybe those people didn’t get to see the person that I see…” Tina bit her lower lip at the realization of what she had just put herself into.

“And what person do you see?” Bette asked truly curious.

Fuck… be careful Kennard, you’re walking on thin ice here…

“I see someone with moral integrity, who is loyal, funny and truly cares about what’s right and fair and cares about people, whether they are her friends or complete strangers… someone brave enough to put yourself on the line for something she believes in, and that takes a lot of conviction…” Tina enumerated extending the list further than she had planned to.
