Short Story 6, Chapter 5: I’m on the other side of where our lives used to be

    Los Angeles, Present Day

Kit saw Bette first and smiled at Tina, “Bette is here, honey. Get me if you need anything, okay? And I mean it…anything.”

“Thanks, Kit,” Tina replied, afraid to look at Bette and lose her heart all over again.

Kit stood up and gave Bette a hug. “Don’t break her heart again, baby girl. She’s the best thing that ever happened to you,” she whispered into Bette’s ear.

    “I know…” Bette whispered back.

Kit smiled at them and said to Bette, “I’ll bring you caramel cappuccino, Bette.”

“Thanks, Kit,” Bette replied and sat down, taking Kit’s chair.

    “Hi, Tee.”

    “Hi, Bette.”

They sat silently for a moment, looking at each other, until Bette’s eyes got teary and she said softly, “I’m so sorry, Tina. I never meant to hurt you.”

    “I know…”

“Thank you for agreeing to see me. I couldn’t stand it if I knew you hated me and never wanted to see me again.”

“Oh, Bette…I could never hate you. I felt so many different things but hate was never one of them.”

They sat in silence for a while, looking at each other when Tina finally asked, “What do you want, Bette?”

“I’ve been thinking a lot lately and it’s been mostly about you,” Bette admitted. “Just remembering how we met, everything we’ve been through together, and how great our relationship was… and I realized that I still love you and letting you go was the biggest mistake of my life.”

“I’ve been thinking a lot too,” Tina replied. “Mostly about the moments in my life that changed everything.”

    “Like what?”

“Looking back, there were a few, like meeting you for instance. Have you ever thought about how our lives would be different if we never met? I believe in destiny and signs from the universe, and I believe that our decisions and even random events has the possibility to change everything. For me it was meeting the woman of my dreams…and everything changed.”
