    “…the eternal rocks beneath…” Ch. 35

    #Saturday, June 19th, 5:30am#

Bette searched at her feet for a small rock or pebble, picked one and aimed it at the balcony. She threw it, banking it off the side of the terrace. She grunted with frustration at missing, picked up another small stone and tossed it. This time the little rock made its way inside the balcony. She waited, listened, and then whispered, “Tina? Hey, baby, are you awake?”

    There was no response.

Bette checked the sky, estimated it was still too early to go banging on the back door even if Helena’s house staff were up. So she picked up two more stones and tossed them one after the other, hoping she’d managed to get Tina’s attention. She waited before whispering again, this time more loudly. “Tina? Are you out there? Come on, wake up!”

    Still no response.

Bette griped and searched one last time for a small stone, resolving to try once more before giving up and going to the door. As she took aim and tossed the rock, a groggy Tina with blonde hair poking out haphazardly around her face stood up. The stone pegged her right between the eyes.

“Ouch! Dang it all, Bette! What the hell!” Tina cried rubbing the red spot between her eyes.

Bette started snickering. “Oops! Sorry, babe.”

“Go on then and laugh at me. Shit, you can’t make a basket to save your life but you manage to get me right between the eyes!” Tina grumbled.

Bette snickered some more. “Okay, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to hit you.”

Tina rubbed her eyes and yawned and looked down at Bette. “What you doing up so early anyway? What’s wrong?”

“I can’t sleep. I’m too excited about tonight,” Bette said. “I wanted some company, someone to have coffee with.”

    “Ain’t Jodi awake?” Tina asked.

“She’s not my girlfriend. You are,” Bette said, looking up and smiling sweetly.

Tina smiled back, chuckled. “Yeah, I am, ain’t I? Well then, let me come down and unlock the back door.”

In a moment Tina had reached her and motioned Bette inside. They hugged good morning and kissed briefly and then Tina took Bette by the hand and led her into Helena’s large kitchen. The staff was already up and the coffee pot brewed. The two women made polite conversation with Helena’s staff as they prepared their coffee before heading back to the deck.

    1. I will remind you, I promised a happy ending for TiBette. I will hold to that promise, so have some faith and trust me. Just trust me. Through the crucible of these events, their love will be tempered and crystallized into solid bedrock. And, only a handful of chapters until the sweet ending. Yeah!

      • BenMac, this chapter was wonderful as usual displaying your awesome talent. I don’t know where to begin to tell you what I think of your writing but perhaps, just maybe, I’ve told you often enough, hopefully. You have taken us through the gamut of emotions. You’ve had me laughing at Tina’s various country girl sayings, especially her description of kelly as a dingbat that needs a beat down and calling her a twat which is so true; Bette’s love for Tina and her family and her realization of what she means to them all especially her father, how she cared for China Buckley and the miseries she faced everyday from her sick mother. Sure wish there was some way you could save James but “cest la vie” he was always such a sweetie and totally devoted to Bette. There should be someway to put buckleys butt in that fire and send her to eternal damnation. Her driver should be a man and get out of that car and blow her away then leave her for the police. At least Melvin got to see her work and what she had done to establish the museum and saw her shine before he died. Hope he lives long enough to know that she and Tina did not perish in the explosion. Surprisingly I did not cry during this chapter, I could just see what was coming. Mercy sakes! Can hardly wait for the next chapter. It was awesome. Thanks for posting.

    2. I have no words to describe your writing… It is truly as beautiful as the art and the love between Bette and Tina that you portray… Can’t wait until you post again!

    3. Why oh why did I decide to read this at work…..poor *****….I am by now assuming that Bette and Tina survive. I just hope they have all their limbs intact and no one falls into a coma or anything. You have a great way of writing! Very nice with the countdown.

Oh great, there the realization of the fact that I have to wait yet another week for another chapter hit me!
      Pls post soon!!!!

    4. What a cliff hanger! Can’t wait to see your next chapter. I have a very bad feeling about James, Esme, and China. I also fear that Melvin will not survive the night’s events. Sadness is coming and I do have faith in you that there will be a happy ending.

    5. That was quite a lot of tension, and it’s still up in the air as to who all has survived. Damn Faye Buckley.

Sigh. At least most got out

The museum has to be rebuilt, just to send a message. Faye can’t think that she won, and she can’t view China as a necessary sacrifice. She’s lost already, but it might take her years or never to realise how much.

Thanks for the post, BenMac, but we need the next one as soon as you can swing it!

    6. Wow, I’m impressed BenMac, that was literally one hell of a chapter.

I agree with radleks, i do have the feeling that James, Esme, China and Melvin won’t survive this.

And i worry a lot for our girls.

But you promised us a happy ending, so i will have to wait for that.

      Can you please update sooner?

    7. BM,

I am sure that T&B are safe. I love James. He pretty loves Bette for him to sacrifice himself.

      Thanks for this long chapter.

I am in awe of your talent. As in awesome writing.

    8. I think all of our hands were sweating during the reading! I hope there is a chance of saving Esme, China, James or Melvin, although it seems highly unlikely. I’ve always had a bad feeling about Esme’s future, probably because that was the name of Bette’s mother in “The Groves”. I don’t know if that’s just a coincidence, but I always felt it might mean something. What a woman. And James… His loyalty is equally beautiful and heartbreaking. Can’t wait for the next chapter!

    9. Oh my God! It was a wonderful chapter.
when I started reading, I knew what to expect in the end, but as I went along through the pages in increasingly felt tense and nervous I am, what’s going to happen.
but this is exceeded what I expected.
You promised us a happy ending, so do not die Bette and Tina. But James, Melvin, Ruiz, China?
China has become an unexpected hero in the end (though I already knew she would be) James was loyality to Bette, he is a great friend.
I hope you manage to stay alive in the someone in small group.
I’m looking forward to the next chapter, I’m so excited to see what happens to them. I can not wait a week! :(

    10. Wow! BenMac… I don’t know what to say, really hope all survive. Sounds naive but nothing wrong with having hope, right?? :-) your writing is really getting better and better as the way you wove the whole story with the intricate details here and there are making the story more powerful! I am a bit of scare to read the next chapter as I worry that I might found out names of the people who can’t survive the blast! Dang! Such a dilemma, not reading meant not knowing… Well.. never thought of saying this! But I kinda glad you will post later! another week to go to prepare my heart. I am sad also that the artworks are destroyed! They can re-build the building, but the artwork? Will have another meaning. Thanks for the update, there were times when I clicked next page button and the page showed so slow, or maybe it’s because the tense?? O_o lol ppvs ;-)

      • Oh, and darn: I was really hoping Buckley’s minions would turn on her. But can I at least hope for a very public, very satisfying delivery of justice? It doesn’t have to be fatal. :-) It would be more fun to see her suffer public humiliation and diminishment – kind of like watching the melting of the wicked witch of the west.

    11. Wow! Well worth the wait! This story has captured my attention from the 1st chapter. Thanks so much for the time and effort that you have invested, it is very much appreciated. Now, can we begin the drying of palms?

    12. Bravo, Bravo, Bravo!!! You again prove the versatility of your writing. Comedy, romance, drama, suspense; you do it all more than capably. This story has been a winner from the very beginning and 35 chapters later you are still captivating us all as we clamour for more. I hope there is still a big handful of chapters left, because I for one will hate to see the end to this story. Bring on the next chapter as soon as you can…we’ll be waiting.

    13. Awwwwww. This just made me super sad. China was trying to live up to the way Bette painted her and save the museum and them all she will be hero.. That is so sad and I can’t believe Buckley would just let her own daughter die she is a monster talking bout a prophet God is not into that kind of business. I knew Tina wouldn’t let Bette go and poor Melvin I hope he makes it to at least see Bette and Tina ok. And James just melted my heart he made me almost cry when he smiled and was like I got your back I’m really sad now but I hope they get Buckley she is sick and twisted

    14. Absolutely brilliant writing, BenMac!!!! Everything was so real, palpable and visible. I felt like I was one of the hundreds standing outside and feeling the blast concussion and coughing with disbelief at what had transpired. Wow! Thank you!

    15. Where do I begin? You have taken me thru so many emotions. Tears of joy for the blending of Bette and Tina’s love. They have emptied their trunks to gather their love for one another. You made us laugh at the sheer stupidity of Kelly. We recognized the grace and respect of Peggy, Helena and Bette’s family. So will the courage of China trump the cowardly evil of Faye Buckley? So often we see violence against the innocent to cover ill conceived anger. Can you save the heroes? Esme, China, James, Tina, and Bette? Thank you again for posting a work of love and spirit. You have given us many lessons on life throughout your stories on this site and I am very grateful for your time.

    16. Bloody hell. That was intense. Sad that anyone has to die over it though. I can’t wait to see (read?) the after effects of this major event.
Thanks for posting, I can’t wait for more!

    17. Now that’s what you call explosive!! I felt like I was in a terrorist movie watching the scene and just standing there as it happened. ..please tell me bette and Tina survived I cant live through another lost of Tibette…wow what a wonderful chapter full of action, love, and devotion….well done my friend

    18. That was intense edge of your seat kind of drama. No matter the outcome everyone’s lives will be changed after this experience. I do hope that James made it out – of all the characters that could have been sacrificed James, Esme and China were interesting choices.

    19. OMG….I knew this was going to be a tough chapter, but you really out did yourself, BenMac! How very sad I am for James, Esme, Melvin and China. Please, I know you probably can’t save James, but maybe the other three. And what about Bette and Tina. I’m praying the stairway held up thru the fire! Oh and what about Bette’s painting of her Aunt….maybe that will survive as well. Bette will be devastated if she looses her father. Oh…I’m so stressed out right now. Please can you post by this Friday???? I can’t wait for the next chapter. I feel like I know these people personally. ugh….so worried about them. Great writing once again. :)

    20. Wow, that was intense! I had to go back and read it a second time because the first time I was rushing through to see what happened next.
I love the way you wrote Bette’s speech….very powerful. I hope it inspires the people who were in attendance to help rebuild the museum as soon as possible. What a tragedy that of all of that precious art work was destroyed.
It doesn’t sound like all of the people left in building survived. That is so sad. James being caught in a fireball doesn’t sound survivable.
I’m thinking this is the end of the line for Faye Buckley. She’s not going to get away with this.
I’m anxious to see what happened to Bette and Tina. How will they cope with it?
      Thanks so much for posting.

    21. Good lord, you can write! Awesome cliff hanger, but I fully expect a happy ending we’ve been promised ;) And about that… all this talk about having children in the prior chapters needs to come to fruition. I think Tina has really grown in her own way, and to be whole finally, needs to see that she isn’t so damaged by her upbringing that she couldn’t be a good parent, but rather she’ll be better despite it. Both women were hurt deeply by the absence and/or treatment by their mothers, and I truly believe they’d learn from those experiences.

Lastly, I’m still awaiting the reveal of the significance of the fawn in the meadow, that has appeared so many times to Bette.

    22. It was first a beginning with their love and resolving the past, then looking forward to future while enjoying the present. I dread that we have lost two important men in Bette’s life tonight. What a sacrifice that James made. If we are to believe that Tibette gets their happy ending they should name their son(s) after them. I became more emotional than I thought. That was exceptional as always.
