    “…the eternal rocks beneath…” Ch. 36

The force of the blast had thrown Bette and Tina down a flight of stairs, rolling them like rag dolls as dust and rubble had showered down on them. Bette had landed first with a thud, hitting her head and instantly going unconscious. Tina had landed on top of her, cushioned by Bette’s body, but stunned by the explosion. She had thrown herself over Bette’s face, covering her, hoping to protect and save her.

Now as Tina coughed, wheezed in the dust and smoke, her head aching, her body seizing, she shook herself. The blast…so familiar sounding…the haunting silence that came after. She stared down at Bette’s face; black bits of debris moved across her skin as Tina shook her. The fragments moved like little insects, ants swarming.

And then Tina’s brain short circuited.

Overcome with panic, her body flooded with fear hormones and she was swept back in time. She was climbing the steps of her trailer, holding her breath. Her father was screaming like she’d never heard him scream before. She came to her parent’s bedroom door. There he was on his knees, cradling her mother’s body, the spray of blood and brain and tissue on the bedroom wall behind them, framing them in that doorway.

“Bette?” Tina cried and she wiped Bette’s dusty face. “Bette?” she shook her frantically, put her ear to Bette’s mouth, her chest. “Wake up, Bette! Wake up!”

The taste of spoiled apricot preserves suddenly flooded her mouth and Tina wretched as she continued to scream. “Don’t leave me! You can’t die! Don’t you leave me, damn you!”

Smoke was filling up the stairwell. Through her tears and screams, Tina was coughing, choking for air and oxygen.

“Please, I’ll be good. I promise. Please don’t leave me, please,” she sobbed and coughed. She lay over Bette, hugged her face to her own and wept into Bette’s hair. “Please, please, please,” she repeated and she coughed more. She was growing dizzy, weak. Then she stopped fighting it, the inevitable. There was no point; she had no reason to live now. She wheezed a few more times and then closed her eyes.

“Can you walk?” a man’s voice pierced through the smoke.

Tina looked up with squinted eyes, which burned from the smoke. She hadn’t remembered Sheriff Tucker being so short.

    1. Back on schedule, semester is done!

So here’s a generational test…does anyone know the Mavis Staples song I’ve hinted at in Peggy’s speech and in Melvin’s words to his daughters and Kit actually names? It will be part of the next chapter, and the sentiment will help all of them get through this tough time.

Thanks for reading. I know it was sad, but now it starts to move toward the happy, sweet ending…well, sort of…there’s a little hiccup for Bette and Tina to overcome.

    2. This chapter has left me a bit teary, even though I knew it was coming. I hope they can all heed what Melvin’s asked them.

They’re all going to need a lot of time to get over Melvin’s death, and Bette and Tina are going to have their own share of guilt and anger to get past. Hopefully Tina assents to being in the psych ward for a while, she needs the help.

(As for the Mavis Staples song, I’m going to have to turn to Google for the answer, I don’t think I’ve ever heard of her.)

You warned of a blip, BenMac, but after these last two chapters, I’m not as wary. Thank you for the chapter, it was excellent as always.

    3. Wow thx for this amaizing story. This was very sad………sad that other people have to die, for something that others believe…… the world is cruel. Thx for your post, I know that Tina wil “stay”. And fight to win and be with bette. Pps

    4. So sad, you warned us for it, but i feel real sad now.

I hope Tina stays and they will face and overcome this together, even the little hiccup.

Thanks again for this incredible story.

    5. Thanks BenMac! :-)
An update that has been waiting for since Friday! ^^,
Sad chapter. Never think James would die. Poor Penny.
It’s ironic to know that Esme and China would die together.
Worry about Tina. In her state of mind, she might do something unreasonable, I hope she won’t. The way she asked about which jail do they put Faye is worrying me somehow-don’t care about what will happen to Faye as totally hoping nothing good happen to her, but if Tina do something “stupid” and caused herself to be put in jail then it’s disaster! :-/
Bette must be strong. This is the time where she must be the strong one and pull Tina together. If she can’t handle this, I dont know how Tina will trusting her in the future especially after she “broke” her promise to Tina.
Melvin’s last wish for the girls is very spot on. How will they fulfill this last request from him?! I wonder… Grey period. Ppvs BenMac! ;-) I am glad all on schedule hehe…! :-) we can’t survive for long without your story! :-D lol thanks again! ^^,

    6. I’m so glad you managed to post today! This was sad, indeed. Guess it’s time for our girls to start their hard climb, reach the top and defeat their demons. I can understand Tina’s behaviour, given her past, it’s not unusual at all. Bette needs her too, though. They need each other in order to heal. I’m happy Jodi and Helena are there as well, they are two solid pillars.

Thanks, again, for another amazing chapter! The end got me teary-eyed and that doesn’t happen very often. Well done! Can’t wait to read about the happy moments.

      Happy Mother’s Day!

    7. Beautiful closure to Melvin’s life, BenMac! Hard road ahead for Tina and Bette – keep them turning to each other to get through it please. Again, thank you for this most amazing story!!!

    8. OMG you made me cry I absolutely loved this chapter so many feelings please make tina get the help she needs like Iv said so many feelings looking forward to your next chapter pps

    9. you are evil. waited to read the last one and this one together cuz thought it was the last one. you tricked us. course not even sure you will get this even tho they say in bold black letters the comment thing is fixed. but tried to leave a comment and still didn’t work for me.

hurry with next one cuz still not reading till its done, lol

      your killing me

    10. It was indeed a very sad and painful chapter. It was difficult to read.
in the end, the tears found me.
Tina’s behavior was understandable (though was bad to read)
I hope she give help and Bette will be there for her. Now there is too much weight Bette’s shoulder to get through the attack, the death of friends and the loss of her father. and yet there is Tina, I am afraid this state of mind, Tina then tries to pull away (even though asked them to Melvin). Tina just can not see clearly in the post-traumatic stress. I hope Bette and Tina see that they are able to survive together and help each other.
I know you promised us a “happy ending” but after the sad chapter difficult to see the light. but I trust you and know that you bring us relief.
thank you! I look forward to how they cope with what happened. No more drama do not you? please? :)

    11. I guess I am dating myself by knowing who Mavis Staples is. She is a long time soul and gospel singer from a group called the Staples Singers. Her father, Pop, was an early music pioneer and civil rights activist. She had a successful solo career and still performs from time to time. The song you were referring was a staple of the civil rights movement, We shall not be moved. My grandparents were very much involved in the civil rights movement in the 50’s and 60’s. I spent the summer of 1964 showing around students who were helping to register voters because of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. All of those references Melvin spoke of bring back many memories for me. Now Tina must not be moved. She has to hold steadfast in the reality of her love for Bette. Their combined strengths have to keep away the demon of guilt that threatens to destroy their sanity. I understand the sacrifice of China and Esme but James paid the ultimate debt of unselfishness. Will you discuss the trial and punishment of Faye Buckley? Will Tina heal emotionally? Can Bette step forth to free others fro the margins? I look forward to the completion of this great story. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to experience you great work.

    12. this is one of the saddest story I ever read on Lesfan, so much emotions are going through me right now, even though we knew Melvin was dying his last words still break your heart. But moreover im sad and heartbroken over Tina poor woman has so many demons attacking her after what she went through how can one cope, her life was a horror movie from the rape, losing mother, drunken and abusive father, losing the only woman who care enough for her when was a little girl Miramn, losing Bette all those years ago, not having any successful relationships, only having little to eat, 2 baths a day….smh omg just heartbreaking on this beautiful woman…And Bette just when it all was going good for her in a long time this happen and then losing three people she cared about and the picture of her aunt that gave her strength….I NEED A MOMENT!

    13. This was a roller coaster chapter. Tina was really scaring me. Even though we knew Melvin was going to die it was still hard to read. When Tina disappeared I thought she was on her way to Faye Buckley to do her harm. I was thinking she was going to be arrested and not be there for Bette. Thank you for posting can’t wait to read the next chapter.
