    Summer’s Amusement

Rose woke up to the sun shining into her window.  Almost instantly, she remembered why it was going to be a great day.  She threw off the covers and bounced down the stairs.

“Good morning, Dad!” she said happily as she entered the kitchen.

“You’re in a good mood,” her dad replied, noticing her cheerfulness immediately.

“I’m going to the Ex with Claire today, remember?”

“Oh yeah…” Nathan said, dragging out the last syllable and smiling knowingly.

He watched Rose eat her breakfast hurriedly.  She was clearly excited, but it was a little too fast.

“Slow down, Blossom,” Nathan said.  “You aren’t going to be late.  Take some time to chew.”

    Rose laughed.

    “Thanks, Dad.”

With her excitement it was hard to slow down, but she tried to relax a little bit more for digestion’s sake.

When she went up to her room to get dressed, she decided to wear the shirt her dad had made her.  Going on this date with Claire was kind of like being out.

She got her things ready and started heading out the door to meet Claire at the TTC stop.

“See you later, Blossom,” Nathan said as she went out.  “Have a good time.”

    “Bye, Dad.”

The sun shone brightly as Rose walked down the street to the stop, wondering if Claire would be waiting.

    She was.

Claire stood on the corner, the dappled light passing through the leaves of the trees reflecting off her hair, different parts catching the light as she turned towards Rose coming up the rest of the way.  Luckily for Rose, Claire wasn’t wearing the shirt that Nathan had made her – that would have been a bit too couple-y.

“Have you been waiting long?” Rose asked.

“No,” Claire replied.  “But any amount of waiting for you is worth it.”

Rose could feel her face become hot.  She turned away, but couldn’t suppress a grin. When she finally dared look back after a few moments, Claire was looking up at her, smiling.  She didn’t look away until she heard the bus approaching.

They sat near the front of the bus, Rose in the window seat and Claire on the aisle.  They talked for a while before becoming silent as Rose’s gaze migrated over to the window.  She became lost in her thoughts, when suddenly she was interrupted by a light weight against her shoulder.
