Chapter 4
Bette woke up early. She had plenty of time to get ready for work so she stayed in bed for a little while. Thinking back on how her Sunday went, she was very eager to see Tina. She wanted to take her to J’s Joint and enjoy the music with her. In fact she wanted to spent some other time with Tina. How could she do that?
Thinking about Tina she wondered, what she did know about her? Tina told her she stayed with a friend and that friends parents because of some problems with her own parents. Bette wondered what kind of problems made her leave her parents house. Wait, didn’t Tina also mentioned something about this friend, Dana? Telling this story that she and that Dana character had been to the black area of the neighborhood? Bette didn’t like the sound of it. She smiled and while turning and getting out of bed, she said to herself:
“You’re jealous Porter. Jealous on someone you don’t know. To be honest, what did she know about Tina? Not much. But she herself didn’t tell Tina too much of herself either. Maybe she should open up, see where it would lead to.

In the meantime, she changed and took a shower. She enjoyed the water, she always woke up taking a shower in the morning. After finishing her shower, she put on her clothes, had breakfast and got on her way to work.

When she arrived at work, Big Bertha was already there. There was no one else in the canteen. Bette thought it was a good opportunity to get acquainted with Big Bertha.

“Goodmorning Bertha, how’s the finger?”

“Hey, Pretty Face……..sorry, I mean Bette. It hurts, but it’s okay. I think I had it coming. Didn’t I?”

“I guess you did but I still regret the way things went. We’re the only women working here, we should stick together and hold each others back.”

“You’re right but this is a new situation for me. I was used to be the only woman working here. It felt like I was the queen, so to speak.”

Bette and Big Bertha talked for awhile before the first man came in. It was James.

“Jimbo, how’s it hanging boy?”
