    Heartbeat – Chapter 1

“President Porter!” A student rushed to Bette Porter, president of the university, when he saw her stumble and fall to on the tracks. Other students had started to run towards him to see if they could be of any assistance. “Someone grab the defibrillator off the wall! Someone get the nurse and the P.A.! Someone call 911 and tell them to get an ambulance at the athletic building and someone call James, her assistant, and tell him he needs to call President Porter’s wife immediately!” He watched as students scrambled around and did what he shouted.

The young student felt someone kneel next to him. “I’m a trained EMT! Everyone step back….give me some room, dammit!” The EMT assessed Bette’s condition. “Dr. Porter…look at me…where does it hurt? Can you answer me?” The EMT turned to the student. “Help me lay her on her back. Dr. Porter…can you hear me?” A female student reached them and placed the defibrillator on the floor next to the EMT.

The EMT and students turned when they heard the screeching of the tires on the indoor track’s floor and parted like the Red Sea when they saw the nurse and P.A. rush from the golf cart with medical equipment in hand.

    “What happened?” The P.A. asked.

The student, who saw Bette fall, replied, “I was watching her jog around the tracks. She stumbled and fell on the tracks. I ran to her and we put her on her back.”

The EMT turned to the nurse and P.A. and watched as they took Bette’s vitals. “I think she’s having a heart attack.”

“I need to start an I.V.” The P.A. told the nurse. “Where’s that damn ambulance.” The P.A. took Bette’s one arm, tied a tourniquet around it and felt for a vein, when he found one he wiped the area with an alcohol pad. He used his left thumb to hold the vein in place and inserted a 20 gauge IV catheter through the skin and into the vein. Feeling a slight pop he saw blood return to the flash back chamber. He pushed the catheter further in the vein and released the tourniquet and connected the IV tubing and set the IV fluids briskly.

“Out of my way! Out of way!” James ran past the students and knelt beside Bette and took her hand in his. “Bette…Bette…it’s going to be okay.” He watched as Bette winced. Her complexion getting pale with each passing second.

Bette looked up at the activity surrounding her. “It hurts.” She winced and clenched her fists, the pain was getting unbearable. “Tina…Tina…” she whispered before closing her eyes.
