“The doctors think you body couldn’t cope anymore and forced you into labour.”
“I’ve let you and him down.” Tina said crying. She couldn’t help the tears that were running down her face. She felt useless.
“No you haven’t. The doctors say he is healthy because of you.”
“When can I see him?”
“Shortly. You’ve got to be seen by the doctor first. The gang are coming.”
Tina nodded. All she wanted was to hold her son.
A doctor came in but Tina wasn’t really listening. He checked her over before a nurse with a wheelchair arrived and took Tina and Bette to the baby unit. In a room on his own in a tiny incubator was her son. He was tiny, but he had curly dark hair. His skin the same as Bette’s he had a tiny oxygen tube up his nose and he was wearing a tiny diaper. He looked perfectly formed. Tina was rolled over to him and ran her fingers along his face.
“For a baby born at 28 week he is doing well. He is well developed.”
“Is he doing okay?” Tina asked.
“Yes, we are doing tests but he seems good his lungs are fully developed which is the most important thing. In a couple of days you should be able to hold him. We will feed him via a tube for now to make sure he is getting everything he needs.”
“I was hoping to breast feed.”
“We can express your milk and give it too him. Did you buy a breast pump?”
“No, but I can’t get one, right B?” She turned to Bette who smiled. Her eyes had been locked on their son
“We sure can, anything for the two of you. Man the nursey isn’t even ready.”
“Too late now he is here,” Tina said smiling softly. She was so drawn to her sleeping son.
“Have you got names for him?”
“No,” Tina said slowly. “B we need to name him.”
“We do,” Bette looked at her son. “We haven’t really talked about it.”
Tina reached out and touched his soft curls.
“What was the name of the doctor who delivered him?” Tina asked softly
“Xavier Harry. Most people name their kids Harry after him.” The nurse said smiling.
“I like Xavier.” Bette said softly.
“Xavier Marvin Porter Kennard.” Tina said.
Bette smiled, her father had passed away before they had meet. Tina knw that he had made sure that Bette go the best of everything.
“Really?” Bette said kissing Tinas temple.
“Yes really.” Tina looked back at her son “Hey Xavier I am mommy, and this is mama and we love you.”
“Very much so, and we are going to make sure you big and strong and you and mommy are healthy and we can take you back to the ranch.” Bette grinned. “Is there any chance that because Tina will be in a few days that we can have a private room with Tina and Xavier in?”
“It costs a lot more.” The nurse said. families often asked but couldn’t pay.
“Money is nothing.” Tina said. “What my insurance won’t pay I will,”
“We would need some up front costs. I can get the admin to come to you today.”
“As soon as possible.” Bette said. “He needs us close.”
Tina smiled that her wife was already over protective of their son.
“I will go to the store when Shane and Alice get here. I’ll take Alice with me and Shane can stay with you, we will need a list of everything you both need.” Bette said.
Tina nodded as touched her son. She had never felt such love. It made her heart burst. The nurse was on the phone and lady appeared.
“Ms Porter, Ms Kennard I believe you want a private room for Ms Kennard and your new born son.”
“Yes.” Bette said looking at the smarty dressed woman.
“That won’t be a problem. I will arrange it.”
“Do you need my card?” Tina said.
“No, no, we know what kind of insurance you have we know you’ll pay. It’s fine. I will arrange it now and get you both moved as soon as possible.”
“Thank you,” Tina said. She yawned she was tired but at the same time she didn’t want to move. Bette wrapped her arms around Tina and kissed her. Both of them looking at the new addition of their family.
