Bette came back into the house immediately after giving the speech, not allowing any questions from the press. When they realized that nothing more was forthcoming from the mayoral candidate or her PR Manager, they left the premises dispersing to newspaper offices, Network studios, homes, coffee shops or wherever it was that news-mongers went to write copy, send blogs, tweet, or edit sound bites to broadcast on the evening news or trend on social media.
Investigative reporters were deployed to dig through the archives to find dirt on the Porter family. In less than 12 hours the Sunday morning political news show hosts would gather at a round-table with a panel of experts in whatever topic they deemed most scandalous to give editorials. Thousands of men, women and students from all walks of life would tune in, take sides and debate their positions in classrooms and at water-coolers on Monday morning. It was all about viewership and ratings. The hell with privacy, compassion for the family and consideration not to cause further pain.
There would no doubt be a resurgence of the ‘Kit Porter Story’. The famed R&B musician of the early 90’s whose career took a downward spiral because of drug abuse and alcoholism. They would skim over the fact that she was drug-free and had been sober for over a decade at the time of the accident. The negative publicity would focus on her weaknesses and inability to make better choices in her youth that attributed to her vulnerability to addiction. Big Pharma would not take the fall for this unfortunate tragedy.
Her bigger than life half-sister had barged into Bette’s world 18 years earlier when she’d moved to Los Angeles and disrupted the calm. They fought constantly about her addictions and dependencies. Kit was struggling to be better and needed her sister’s help, but Bette wanted no part of it. There was no room in Bette Porter’s perfect life for a drug-addicted alcoholic older sister that had abandoned her as a child. If not for Tina’s intervention when Kit came to make amends the relationship between the two sisters would not have mended.
In the end Kit proved to be fiercely loyal and alternated between big sister and momma bear in how she cared for Bette, Tina, Shane, Alice, and Helena. Angelica was her pride and joy. The two were very close since infancy when Kit dated Angie’s nanny Angus Partridge. Through the years with all the ups and downs her parents subjected Angie to with their on-again, off again relationship, Auntie Kit was a constant in Angie’s life.
