Queens, New York
Wednesday, May 25, 2011
Matt Crown had been camped out in his 1999 Oldsmobile Intrigue along Van Dam Street since daybreak, well before the start of the Queensboro Correctional Facility regular office hours. He didn’t want to chance missing the release of the day’s batch of parolees, so he brought breakfast and lunch with him. Luckily the humidity matched the heat, and he sweated out everything he drank.
One by one, ex-cons exited the facility, each carrying the same blue folder with the New York State Department of Corrections emblem printed on the front. Finally, sometime after 1 pm, Cameron Porter walked thru the main doors, carrying the same blue folder. That was Matt’s cue. He exited his sweltering Oldsmobile and caught up with Cam as he walked down Van Dam Street.
“Cameron Porter, right?” He called out.
Cam stopped when he heard his name and turned around. “Yeah, who wants to know?”
“I’m Matt Crown. I’m with the Daily News. I have some questions about Kelly Freemont.”
“She killed my father, what else do you have to know?”
“You worked at Tellus when your sister hired her, isn’t that right?”
“Can you tell me why she hired her?”
“Why do you want to know?”
“It just seemed strange with her track record in business that your sister would hire her. Did it have anything to do with the sex photos they took when they were at Yale?”
“What the fuck? How the hell…” Cam had stopped before he confirmed the existence of the photos, unaware that they had already gone viral on the internet. “Look, man, I don’t know what you’re after, but…”
“Can you tell me why Bette covered your tracks after you embezzled over $1 million from Tellus?”
“Why don’t you ask her?”
“I did, now I’m asking you.”
“Well, I have nothing to say to you.”
“Do you believe the rumor that Bette was in on the plan to kill your father?”
Cam laughed. Before all hell broke loose the night Melvin was killed, Bette was the favorite child, and she adored him. It was absurd to think she had anything to do with his death. “You’re kidding, right?”
“No, I’m not. Rumor has it that she and Kelly rekindled their relationship around the time Kelly killed your father. It’s reasonable to wonder if Bette wanted him out of the way considering his views on homosexuality.”
