Five Times Bella Swan Died and One Time She Didn't

Edward smelled her before he saw her, her sweet scent filled his nostrils as she moved towards the parking lot. Her whole body visibly stiffened when she saw him, but she didn’t stop walking. No, instead she changed course, heading right towards him. The girl must have been suicidal.

He didn’t bother trying to hold his breath as she came closer. He only needed to maintain enough control to get her someone secluded. As she approached her scent grew even more tantalizing. It took all of his will power not to devour her right there where she stood.

“Can we talk?” she asked, her voice walking the line between fear and control.

He never thought she’d be so accommodating. “Yeah, we should talk,” Edward nodded quickly.

A loud noise at the other end of the parking lot drew the attention of most everyone around them. Two freshmen boys were fighting, shoving each other back and forth while the whole school ran to watch. Edward looked at Jasper who was focused intently on the fight. He must have manipulated the anger inside of them to get a fight to break out. It was the perfect diversion; he’d have to thank his brother later.

“Come with me,” Edward ripped his eyes away from the fight, taking the girl by the shoulder and navigating her quickly to the cover of the forest.

“Did I do something to upset you in class?” she asked as they walked, shrugging out of his hold. She seemed unsure of herself about this confrontation, but determined to have it, like she’d made up her mind to confront him but had no idea really how to go about it.

“Yeah, you could say that,” Edward breathed out as they reached a clearing far enough away from the school for him to feel comfortable. This would have to do. The monster inside of him growled with delight.

Bella stopped walking and turned to face him. Her mouth was open like she was about to say something, but nothing came out. Instead she stared slack jawed in fear and awe. She must have seen in his eyes what he was about to do.

“I’m so sorry,’ Edward growled, moving too fast for her to have a chance to scream. His teeth sank into the flesh of her neck, tearing into her carotid artery. Her blood sprang free from the jail of her veins—there were no words. The smell couldn’t even compare to the way it tasted. So warm; so sweet. It was the richest most potent blood he’d ever fed on. None before could be compared to it. Had he known the flavor could be so captivating, he would have never been able to give it up human blood in the first place. He would have spent his entire existence searching for such sweetness—for such perfection.

Her arms flailed uselessly against his stone body, trying to fend him off in her dying panic. She was fading, but not fast enough. He’d hoped she wouldn’t feel it—that he’d kill her quickly and that she’d never know what hit her. It was a stupid hope. The venom was painful, he knew that, and instant death wasn’t an exact science. He bit deeper into her neck, finishing her off so she wouldn’t feel it anymore. Her whole body relaxed and then went limp in his arms. Her blood cooled rapidly after that. He drank as much as he could, inhaling her like an elixir—she was a drug. His drug. When he finished, he craved more—completely unsatisfied. He could taste her on his teeth and his body yearned to have just a little more. There could be no more though. Bella Swan was one of a kind. Still—her flavor intoxicated him.

When he was done he pulled back. Her head fell back uselessly and her eyes were closed in a peaceful mask. Gently he laid her on the forest floor. Looking down at her, skin pale with death, he knew immediately how grave his mistake had been. Not that he had broken and tasted human blood, or even that this poor girl had been innocent in the whole thing. There was more to it than that, more than he could fully comprehend. This girl…he knew nothing about her. She was probably as silly and insignificant as the other humans, and yet something told him there was more to her than her divine blood. The loss of her life made his insides ache with some unknown feeling. He’d done something terribly, terribly wrong and he would never fully understand why.

    “I’m so sorry,” he whispered.

Edward, Alice’s thoughts called out to him. Time to go.

Edward backed away slowly, unable to tear his eyes away from this human girl. This meaningless, human girl. This meaningless, entrancing, human girl. Somehow he knew, he’d just made the biggest mistake of his immortal life…
