    Strangers on the roof

Bette looked at her with the same wondering expression as before. A small silence enveloped them, and Tina felt Bette lift their intertwined hands to place a soft kiss on her fingers.

Tina thanked the gods that the growing darkness of the night covered some of the blush that threatened to cover her entire face.

    – “No, thank you”.- Bette whispered before averting her gaze to the horizon again.- “I’m thankful for you”.

They sat on the roof until the stars came out, talking about everything and nothing at the same time. When they finally parted, Tina felt a peace she hadn’t felt in weeks.

It was only when she arrived at her apartment that she realized with overwhelming sadness that she had no way of contacting Bette. No contact information had been shared, she didn’t know her last name, she knew nothing.

Disappointed, she plopped down on her small living room couch, wondering if she would ever see her again.

Days turned into weeks, and Tina found herself coming back to the rooftop almost every day, hoping to catch a glimpse of the brown hair, the dark eyes, or the bright smile that haunted her dream, but she never saw them.

In between her days, Tina carried Bette’s words in her heart. She knew she had talent, and despite the situation in Shaolin, she knew she could go further. Weeks turned into months, and when she was on the last stretch of her savings, she got a call to work as an executive for a small production company that was slowly making a name for itself by bringing several critically acclaimed independent films to the screen.

The day she got the call, a feeling of happiness swept through her body. she was overwhelmed with joy. Without realizing it, she almost ran to the roof in hopes of meeting Bette. she wanted to tell her that she had been right; she wanted to hug her and thank her for her words. She wanted to kiss her and tell her that even though they had shared so little, she had had a profound impact on her life. With disappointment, however, she realized that no one was there.

She ran her eyes over every corner of the roof, hoping to find some trace of the woman who had managed to mean so much to her with so little. There was nothing there.

Sadness replaced her excitement. She closed her eyes and went down the fire escape. She decided then that she would not return tomorrow.

A few more days went by, and on the third day of her new job, she was surprised to find a bouquet of flowers on her desk. With her heart pounding in her chest and her soul full of hope, she crossed the few feet between the door and the flowers. With a trembling hand, she took the envelope in the bouquet. When she opened it, her face broke into an expression of disbelief and happiness. Inside were two things, a note in neat handwriting that read:

You are a hard woman to find, Tina Kennard. I hope I’m not making a fool of myself, but I really don’t care. I hope you are as eager to see me again as I am to see you”.

Next to it was a thick cream-colored piece of paper inviting her to the opening of the Bette Porter Art Gallery.

Tina knew at that moment that she would be forever grateful for the day she lost her job because that day, she somehow gained the love of her life.
