    The Tester

The young woman looked back down at her phone and the waitress stared at her with a curious expression painted on her face. She shifted from foot to foot for a couple of seconds, clasped her hands together on her lap, and eventually walked away with a long sigh.

The young woman’s cell rang as she was sipping her coffee. She rolled her eyes and placed the mug back on the table.

“Yeah”, she muttered into the receiver, her eyes transfixed on a black fly on the wall.

“She did it!”, the voice exclaimed. It was a male voice and sounded upset. It sounded in anger.

The woman exhaled a long breath.

“What can I say? You saw the picture”.

“Yeah…”, the man replied, on the verge of tears, “…Yeah, I did. She really did it. With you”.

“Sorry, man…”, she just commented emotionlessly, “…Look, can you just stop by at DEW? We need to formalize some stuff”.

The man on the other line choked a sob.

“…Sure, sure…”, she chuckled bitterly, “…Business is business, isn’t, Shane?”.

“Yeah. Business is business. Just stop by, okay? Today”.

She hung up and put the phone back into the inside pocket of her black blazer. She finished drinking her coffee and placed ten bucks on the table.

    She left the bar.

Shane jumped off her jeep and opened the door of DEW. It was her place, her club, her passion and she was the boss. Everybody respected her and even feared her. She didn’t mind. She was young, rich and healthy, she had a promising career in front of her and, at thirty, she had almost fulfilled all of her dreams.

    Almost.

And she had a second job that she enjoyed doing. A lot.

Many people thought that DEW was to Shane as The Planet was to Kit Porter, but they were wrong. First of all, Shane wasn’t a competitive person and didn’t mind if The Planet was much more famous than DEW. And, in any event, the huge part of the money she earned had nothing to do with her club – which was successful anyway.

The pack of money she earned every day had more to do with her second job.
