Tina walks closer to Alice making her shrink back, intimidated.
“I don’t know what fucking world you’re living in, but desirable is not a word I would ever attribute to you. Let me be clear before I leave to find my Wife: if any hair is harmed on her head, if you’ve forced her back into the black hole in her mind, I promise you –”
She looks quickly to Candace before looking back at Alice.
“I promise both of you – I will tear you apart with my bare hands. Your death will come slowly and painfully. Let this serve as your notice: after I’ve found and taken care of my Wife, I’m coming for you both. My focus is needed elsewhere in this moment, but our moment will come, and we’ll see how strong and sure of yourself you are then.”
As Tina and Shane exit the office James comes in with security and remove Alice and Candace from the premises.
Tina and Shane pace back and forth in the living room of the Porter Kennard residence.
“God Shane, where could she be?! We’ve been driving around and calling hotels, hospitals, and airports for 3 days! Where else can we look? Does she own any other property? Kit said that she hasn’t been located at the residences her Father left her in New York, Boston, or Philadelphia, but maybe she owns other property she bought herself.”
Shane stops pacing.
“FUCK! Why didn’t I think of that before?”
“Think of what? Do you know where she could be?”
“When Bette first came to LA, she stayed with Alice and I, but after she was all healed up, she left for about 2 months. She told us she needed time to herself – to find herself – before she restarted her life here. She didn’t tell us where she was going, but when I had offered to drive her to the airport she told me she wasn’t flying to her destination, she was driving – it was only a few hours away. I assumed at the time that she was going to a hotel or something, but what if she was buying like a hide-out, or had bought one while recovering and was going there to… pull herself together. Wherever she went, it helped her. When she came back it was like being with the Bette Porter I knew before she met Candace – well, in public anyway. She still struggled with her inner demons, but she did so in private. That’s probably where she is now, we just need to figure out where that is.”
“Okay, okay. That’s good. If she owns it, she probably has some records here; if she visited some place, she probably wrote that down somewhere. I’ve already been through her work and home computer and there’s nothing there. You start looking through her files and her office, and I’ll start digging through the bedroom.”
Six hours has passed as Tina and Shane rip their designated rooms apart, but still they have found no leads. Shane enters the bedroom to suggest taking a break to regroup and eat. She comes in to find Tina buried in the closet.
“Hey Tina, you haven’t eaten since Saturday. Why don’t we take a break and we can continue searching after we get some food?”
Tina continues rooting through the closet.
“No, I can’t stop, not until we find something that will help us find her. There has to be–”
Tina stops talking when she uncovers a cutout in the hardwood floor at the back of the closet. She tries to pry the floor up but can’t get it to lift, she turns to Shane.
“Get me a butter knife!”
Shane runs to the kitchen and returns moments later with a knife. She hands it to Tina who pries up the cut floorboard. Once removed, they see what’s hidden is a safe. Shane grabs it and brings it to the bed as Tina moves toward the dresser and starts sifting through Bette’s jewelry box.
“What are you doing Tina?”
“I’ve seen a couple of loose keys in the bottom of her jewelry box before. I never asked about them because they didn’t seem attached to anything. I’m sure one of them is for the safe, and maybe the contents of the safe will tell us what the other key is for. YES! Got it!”
Tina rushes over to the bed with the keys in hand. Nervously, she brings the smaller key to the lock on the box and inserts it. Looking to Shane, she turns the key, and both let out their held breath when it unlocks. When Tina lifts the lid, both women gasp at what they find.
“Oh my god…”
