To thump on a drum hardly anyone else here touches, I’d like to point out that the voters of the Republic of Ireland finally voted to repeal a clause of their national constitution that outlawed abortion for just about every possible reason except medical certainty of the woman’s death. It is not yet guaranteed just how available abortions will be in Eire, but presumably any restrictions will be in regular legislation rather than in constitutional provisions.
However, it turns out that Northern Ireland — part of the UK — still has a virtually complete prohibition on abortion much like the one just voted out in the Republic to the south. This is the darndest thing because all Irish, both north and south, had been taking the ferry to the UK for abortions where the law is liberal and abortions are legal and affordable. I would have figured that Northern Ireland, being so close to England in more ways than one, would have had very similar attitudes and laws (esp since, in the US, abortion is regarded as a Constitutional right), so Northern Ireland’s backward attitude comes as a surprise to me. But it appears that the vote in Eire is putting the pressure on the Northerners to similarly open up.
At any rate, a step forward.
