Not sure this will go through. But wanted to share if possible. This is so well written.
A random rant on why Bette Porter is such a compelling character
GenQ’s Bette Porter isnt THE Bette Porter fans love and adore. Hence, genQ isn’t canon.
Here’s the thing about compelling characters…. Everyone can project their own experiences onto them. When it comes to Bette, I would argue she’s an iconic lesbian character that is well liked and loved by fans, precisely because she’s a character easy to relate to and many people can draw parallels between the character and their own lives. Bette represents and embodies a lot of personal characteristic that are central and highly valued among the lesbian and sapphic community. A strong personality, strong convictions, she’s passionate, confident, proud, and sexually confident. Essentially, Bette subverts traditional notions of the female genders, in a similar way that many queer and lesbian women do. Unfortunately, violating traditional gender norms and expectations come at a cost, in the form of stigma and discrimination, and watching Bette shine in all her glory is fulfilling for fans who have experienced stigma and discrimination for those exact characteristics.
Another characteristic that was compelling to a lot of fans, is Bette’s love and devotion for Tina. I’ll say this until my face turns blue, BETTE IS NOT A PLAYER AND WOMANIZER. That is absolutely not who she is, this is WHY her affair with the carpenter was such a huge deal. It went completely against her values. When Bette and Tina separated because Tina was had feelings for men, Bette didn’t even date until it became clear to her that Tina was never coming back from heteroville. But even then, I would argue, Bette always held a bit of hope. In her relationship with Jody, it became crystal clear to Bette that there was only one person in this planet who made her life complete, Tina. She keeps singing the same song in genQ, except genQ has her acting in strange ways….. having an affair with a closeted married woman?! Bette could get lonely, that’s for sure, but I don’t see her falling so low and having zero respect for herself. The Bette Porter I know is too proud and confident to land that low. The Bette Porter I know is too proud and confident to allow her own child to become a parent to her. GenQ’s version of Bette isn’t even a shadow of the iconic character I love.
With that said, genQ is completely destroying an iconic character in an attempt to make their show relevant and appealing to fans. They’re molding the character to fit into the fantasies of a younger group of fans rather than honoring a character that is already part of LGBTQ history. I keep saying it, fans keep saying it, genQ has contribute nothing to the LGBTQ community, instead they are destroying the legacy and contributions the OG show made to the LGBTQ community. The show made a lot of mistakes and got a lot of things wrong, but they got one thing completely right…. Tibette.
