‘Explains the headaches…’
“You can’t change what you’ve done, no. But we’ve all done things we’re not proud of.” ‘Like last night’ “You can change what you’re going to do though.”
Spencer looked up at her, red eyed and confused. “You’re right, I could just disappear.”
Ashley laughed hollowly. “That’s not the best answer Spencer. A good person, a real person, would stay and sort this out.”
“I’m not sure I can be that person” Spencer whispered.
“Well, I don’t know either.” Ashley said, knowing it was harsh. It was hardly comforting, supportive, but at least it was honest. Oddly, the voice in her head remained silent. “But I think it’s what you should do.”
“God Ashley, I don’t even know where to start” she wailed. “I’ve fucked things up so much.”
Ashley squeezed her hands between her knees and took a deep breath. “I guess you start with you and work things out from there.”
Spencer wiped her nose on her sleeve and looked at her friend quizzically. “What do you mean?”
“I mean you have to decide what you want Spencer, what you really want. Then you have to slowly piece things back together until you can try for it. Doesn’t mean you’ll get it, but at least you’ll have done it the right way.” Ok, maybe not the most eloquent answer but it was close enough to what she meant.
“I… what do I want?”
Ashley snorted. “Who knows.” She stood up. “But I can’t tell you, and Aiden can’t tell you.” At the mention of the boy they both called a friend, Spencer paled and then flushed. Ashley knew she was being harsh but perhaps that’s what Spencer needed, a reality check. They were all in this, all in it together. There was no point in tiptoeing around it.
Spencer swallowed, Ashley watched her throat bob up and down.
“I know I want to make things right between everyone.”
“Do you know that may not be possible?” Ashley bit back. Spencer looked away, pained. Ashley crossed her arms. Perhaps her own pain was coming out now too. When the blonde started a choked off reply she relented a little. “Look” She came over to kneel in front of the trembling girl. “Whatever happens, I’ll help ok Spencer. I can promise I’ll be around. I can’t promise in what capacity, but… I’ll be here. Ok?”
Spencer swallowed again. The convulsive, repetitive movement had Ashley mildly mesmerized. “Why?”
The question stunned her. Mostly because she didn’t have an answer. So she shrugged. “I just will be.”
“Thank you” the whisper was so quiet it nearly slipped away.
“Look” Ashley said, feeling the need to elaborate on what was swirling through her brain. “If Aiden’s what you want, then I guess that will be easy enough. I… I can live with it, I just need to know that it’s what you want. But you can’t lie to yourself Spencer, you can never really lie to yourself. And I don’t want you to hurt him by pretending. He’s like my brother, my family, and I won’t let you hurt him. If you really want him then you have to tell me, and make me believe you. Because if you don’t, and you keep up this charade, I will tell him Spencer. I’ll tell him everything. Just… I know you can’t think this all out now, but you need to start with you, then move from there ok. Just… do it.” The threat wasn’t hollow, it was the most determined thing she could remember saying in eons.
To her surprise Spencer stood up in front of her.
“Thank you.” It was strong and convincing, it was… completely at odds with the Spencer that had been in her room for the last twelve hours. The blonde walked to the door, and only stopped when she got there, turning to Ashley. She nodded. “Thanks.”
And then she was gone, leaving the brunette alone with her thoughts.
‘Just you and I eh… damn.’

I can’t believe how screwed up Spencer is and how mature Ashley is being…..but, I love it. Poor Aiden…he made the girl vomit! LMAO;) If she’s nice, when she breaks up with him, she’ll leave that part out.
