Don’t Cry Out. – (Chapter: 6. Nineties Kids.)

Spencer decided to wrap up her work for the day, stacking everything together and arranging it neatly on the desk. She’d never been much of a neat freak, but she wasn’t one to leave the house in disarray either. Glen was the Carlin that specialized in that particular department, but it wasn’t surprising; he was a pig in nearly every aspect of life.

As she usually did, Spencer planned to treat herself to something for finishing up early. Usually it was a coffee, and she’d simply walk herself the few blocks to get to the closest coffee shop, get her order, and drink it on the way home.

Somehow, she never made it to said coffee shop. Rather, before she even realized she’d done it, Spencer found herself standing before what was probably her new favorite place; Farley Bakery.

She wondered if the door was exhausted at the end of the day, constantly swinging open and then closed again every time a person entered or exited. The bell-like ding sound announced her crossing of the threshold, but, like before, no one seemed to peer in her direction. There weren’t many people there to do so, anyhow. Thankfully, Ashley Davies was one of those few people.

A smile permanently plastered across her face, Spencer approached the counter. Ashley had her back turned, seeming to fiddle with the coffee pot clumsily, as if it were helplessly broken and she was doing all she could to save it. Actually, this seemed to be the case, as she whispered a frustrated curse as something snapped or popped out of her hands and landed on the floor.

    1. Damn, that was a trip down memory lane! I had all the Ninja Turtle action figures…they played with my barbies. Love the fic, keep up the good work!Oh, and Ashley’s right, Michaelangelo is the best TMNT.

    2. I am usually a silent reader but I felt compeled to say that the best ninja turtle was neither Michelangelo nor Rapheal, Leonardo was the best. Well I think Spencer should come clean before it all blows up in her face. Or better yet it will blow up in her face and then she will be left to try and explain. Well even though I may not say it after each update I love your story and the secret lives of office supplies.

    3. ooh oooh ooooooh number exchange! And yes, we’re still in the fallout shelter. We have pringles and coke now. Both real and coke zero for those people who worry about their weight in the post apocalyptic era. I can tell the explosion is going to be huge. Oh deary me. Oh well, I have buffy reruns in here, I’m sweet. Waiting for you to join, but you have to bring the stapler. And the paper clip. I loved the paperclip! I LOVED THE UPDATE! I might, in fact, love you :)

    4. YAY! Shout outs for me and everyone else! What a great way to start an update. Btw, it was a really great one. And all those toys you mentioned? Awesome, I was never into MTNT but I liked Barbies and Lite-Brites and My Little Pony and…that over stuff. Wicked. Keep posting, I like this story ‘cos you get your inspiration from real life. :] Pms please. Love xoxo.

    9. i thought lite brights went out of popularity in the 80’s. i still have my easy bake oven…i think it was one of the first one’s ever made. i’m trying to figure out what to do with it, since they probably don’t even make the right light bulbs for it anymore and i doubt my future little boy will want to use it. any suggestions? so i’m like 170 years old and i collected smurf figures. (just felt like i was at an AA meeting or something) this story is sooo much fun…but darn i wish spencer would tell ashley the truth. ack. it’s going to get messy…too messy for ninja turtle band aids i think.

    11. I’m with Pegleg, yo. This brought be back to my days of old school Star Wars action figures (my sister had the Milenium Falcon – I was SO jealous) and Garbage Pail Kids cards. I admit, however, I totally had My Little Pony toys, but I wasn’t a huge fan. I only had them in Preschool. What I really wanted, though, was a Lite Brite. We only had one in my Preschool and all the boys would take it over for ALL of playtime. I was too shy so I never got a go at it. I still regret my inaction to this very day. :) And no way in hell would my parents EVER give me an Easy-Bake or anything else food related. My best friend had a Snoopy Cone machine and that rocked, though. She also had Hungry Hungry Hippos, which was the bomb, and Crossfire! which sucked ass.

    13. Ah the 90s, ninja turtles and light-brites–I loved ’em. Thanks for the flashback. And thanks for another bang-up post. I agree with the others, this is going to fall apart in front of Spencer’s face. But in the meantime, I’m just going to enjoy the ride.

    17. Man, that fic brought me back! I still have all my old G.I. Joe’s and Garbage Pail Kids. Never had an Easy-Bake, though, but I did have a Snoopy Sno-Cone machine. Oh…and love this fic! I hate that Spencer is lying about things. Cause they snowball…baaadly. And soon she will find herself unable to lie anymore and it’s going to hurt everyone involved. Love your dialogue. Rings so true and flows nicely.:)

    19. oh man i agree with pegleg and goober. i can still remember the theme song to teenage mutant ninja turtle! ;) i cant remember all of them i can only recall leonardo. hmm. but i never had any barbies cos my mom said it’s evil. muahahaah. but i wouldnt know what to do with them either. brush their hair and change clothes? puhleez. anyway i love love love this fic. it was funny how the stapler got grounded inside the drawer. the inanimate objects story is such an important part of your fic which makes it so different and unique. i also love how you describe spencer and her fear of emotional pain. your version of spencer is so vulnerable and lovable, one of the best around.:)
