Finally On the Ground – (Chapter: Adina)

Spencer offered to get a lift back to town for Ashley but she refused. She was quite happy to walk, despite the mud and distance. She had that funny little grin on her face that Spencer was starting to fall for and that the blonde knew was on her own face too. Not that she could help it either.

Standing at the front door she wanted, desperately, to kiss the brunette goodbye. Actually, a part of her wanted to drag Ashley back inside, pull her to the other end of the house, lock the door and not emerge for a few days. It was a new part of Spencer, one she certainly had never suspected existed. The rest of her was regarding it with a mixture of curiosity and fear. A lot of fear.

But as it was she just had to say goodnight, soft and tender, hoping the other girl knew and felt the separation the same way. She probably would have chanced a goodbye but her mother felt that it was host duty to appear at the door and wave Ashley off with a fake smile and wave. Actually, the smile was probably real. Spencer fully expected her mother to ban the woman from the house the minute the door was closed. Paula Carlin Graham had her crocodile teeth out.

When the faux cedar door finally clicked shut, as the figure of Ashley traipsed off into the night, Spencer braced herself. And she wasn’t to be disappointed,

“Well really Spencer!” Paula began with an exasperated tone. “Bringing someone like that home, my god, you could practically smell the grease on the girl.”

    “Mother,” Spencer warned tiredly.

“These are not the kind of people I brought you up to associate with. You could have bought Thomas Astor to dinner, he’s in line to be director of the hospital in ten years, but no, instead you drag in any old whore off the street and you plan to be FRIENDS with this girl?”

“Mother!” Spencer was stunned. Ok, she hadn’t expected her mother to like Ashley but that was pretty strong language from Paula Carlin. Spencer wouldn’t have been surprised to find out her mother didn’t even know a word like ‘whore’, so her using it was quite a shock. “That’s completely out of order.”
