The Harder You Fall – 6

Tina shook her head. “If you say so. People like you, and all of them,” Tina nodded at the assemblage, “All of you… well, you intimidate me.”

Bette leaned forward. “Ah, but I’ve just told you our weakness, and knowing a weakness evens the playing field. The art world and the literary world aren’t that different. I mean, who reads anymore? No one, unfortunately. Everyone goes to the movies. The majority is with you.” Bette leaned closer, adopting a conspiratorial tone. “And if art wasn’t my first love and how I make my living, I’d be with you too.”

She was close enough to Tina that she could smell Bette’s perfume. Their eyes met and Tina couldn’t quite breathe. The moment was broken when Bette pulled away, turning her head toward a couple of men approaching them.

Hey,” one of them said, looking Tina up and down. Tina could smell a waft of alcohol-laced breath. “I’ve been watching you all night, sexy.”

Really,” Tina replied, her tone wary. “I can’t say I noticed you at all.”

The man scoffed, undeterred. “Don’t be like that. We had to come over and say something. You two look way too good to ignore, honey.”

Whereas you two don’t,” Tina said, barely holding back her laughter when the guy angrily turned on his heel, bumping into his discomfited wing-man as they beat a hasty retreat.

You handled that well,” Bette said dryly.

I’ve had lots of practice,” Tina said. It was true. She’d rejected losers just as many times as she’d been blown off herself, she thought with a smile.

Are you hungry? I haven’t eaten a full meal since breakfast, and as nice as they are, I really don’t think I can handle another canapé…” Bette let her invitation linger, waiting for a reply.

I am kind of hungry, yeah,” Tina admitted.

Well, what do you say we go back to mine? It’s still pretty early. I have a great wine selection and I order a mean Chinese,” Bette grinned. “And, we can talk without any interruptions.”

Tina’s heart leapt at the invitation and she wondered why it was making her so happy that this woman wanted to get her on her own. She was really enjoying herself, though, and she didn’t want the night to end.

    1. Okay…Shane needs to make a hasty exit and leave Tina to work on her fears. Those thoughts she was having about being alone with Bette…really unhealthy ones. She definitely needs to get more comfortable around her! :>) PPS

    2. Patio here we come,Take a cuddle blanket. My get cold, give Tina some sweats eat dtink and get to know each other better. Shane needs to learn what a bedroon is for. Bette should know to call and let her know she is in town

    3. Damn, Shane just ruined a lovely moment and a potential lovely moment that could have rewulted in them being quite cozy. Mayne all is not lost, they could adjourn to the patio and have drinks and food by the pool. Bette could also offer Tina a pair of sweats, etc so that they could be more comfortable for the rest of the evening. After all, they are similar in size etc, and Tina’s dress is a little snug. Will it accomodate more drinks and chinese food? Can hardly wait for the next chapter. PPS

    4. I am really enjoying your story. Really good pacing with your action an dialogue. Especially like “hearing” Tina’s POV and that she could also see Bette was nervous…however, Tina’s Brush off of the drunken guys hitting on her struck me as a little ruder than may have been intended….looking forward to more.Thank you so much for sharing…
