    Rating: NC-17. And I mean it!

     

    Timeline reference: This story takes place before, during and after episode 2.16/40 For Him The Bell Tolls. There are also references to the storylines in episodes 1.14/14 A Fistful of Dinars, 1.20/20 Ties That Bind, 1.21/21 The Greater Good and 2.13/37 The Quest, as well as hints towards several other episodes (plus a few inside jokes. Catch them if you can!). It might be a good idea to watch the episodes mentioned here by name, before reading this story, but it is not strictly necessary, I don’t think.

     

    Also, I have prolonged the beginning of episode 2.16/40 For Him The Bell Tolls, and changed some of the actions and dialog throughout the episode, so as to fit it to this story; as well as altered the length of time, Xena and Gabrielle spend apart during the episode.

     

    Author’s Note: This is a slightly revised version of a story, I wrote back in ’97, which has just been sitting on my hard drive since. I hope you like it. Feedback would be much appreciated.☺

    Chapter One
     

    Where could she be? thought Gabrielle. She was only supposed to be gone for a candle mark or two. And that was four candle marks ago! Oh, well, I suppose, she got sidetracked by some bandits or something. Nothing out of the ordinary… she thought, as she returned to the parchment, she was working on.

     

    It was a warm evening, early autumn, and with the fire burning, it didn’t feel cold at all. Gabrielle was lying on her back on her bedroll, dressed only in her shift, tapping her quill against her cheek. Hmm, let’s see now… Where was I…? Oh, yes:
