    Without looking back.

    I take a minute and consider calling her; wondering if I am too late.  I pick up my cell phone, type in her speed dial and press send.

     

                I quickly flip my phone shut before it has a chance to connect.  I decide that stirring up that kind of emotion right before an exam is not the smartest idea and resolve to visit her over the summer break to make things right.  I resume my studying and for four straight days I am a walking zombie; overloaded with seemingly useless knowledge I am certain I will forget within two hours of the end of each exam.  Back in the dorm after my last test, Dani and I pop open Dr. Pepper’s to celebrate. 

     

                “Whew!  One year down!”

     

                “Cheers to that!”  I say in relief that the hell of this year is finally over.  “You really have to come down and visit over the summer.”

     

                “Oh definitely, I’m sure I’ll get sick of Jeff ten minutes after I get home and almost wish to be back at school.”  After we finish our drinks, we carry out belongings to our cars, loading them in.  She turns to face me as we both close our trunks.  “Make sure you call me.”

     

                “You too!”

     

                “Promise me something, Ash?”

     

                “Sure.”

     

                “Promise me you’ll call Spencer.  Even if it’s to officially end your friendship.  You can’t leave something like that up in the air.”  I wrap my arms around her and squeeze her tightly.

     

                “I will.”

     

                I drive home plagued by her words, ‘officially end your friendship’.  I can not even wrap my mind around the concept.  Why wouldn’t Spencer and I be able to work this out?  It is not like we never had a fight before.  Of course those of the past were not nearly as complicated, but still; we can get through this.  I wish I knew when she is coming home.  It comes as an unsettling surprise that for the first time, I feel uncomfortable about the idea of calling Mr. C.  Instead of calling I drive directly to Spencer’s house.  At the side door, I stand for a minute contemplating whether I should use my key or knock.  Trying to be as casual as possible, I just walk in.  I see Clay filling a glass at the sink and her turns around to look at me.

    27. lol drastic. ok so its not easy getting over people but everyone does eventually. i’m not saying getting over someone means a clean cut because emotional investment always leaves residue and all we can try to do is keep that to a minumum. spencer cleaned up pretty nice and made good time at it and now it seems like ashleys getting there too. so i guess i’m just confused to as why ashley needs to go all or nothing esp when spencers been with jess for a while now.

    31. Aaaaaahhhhhhh *grabs chest* well actually that was 2 hours ago when I initially read it on my sidekick 2, but I couldn’t leave a comment, so I came back. After I read this update, I was saying “She didn’t even react” out loud, for like 40 minutes afterwards. This fic is just heart-wrenching, but its so good. I can’t believe Spencer didn’t tell Ash she was back in town, and she didn’t even say anything while Ash was there, that fuckin sux. Plus, I have had something like that happen to me in the past, and eventhough currently we are back friends, it has never been the same as it was. I can’t believe Spencer is getting an apartment, out there, with that Ash-wannabe. Im interested to see what is actually gonna happen next. When Ash put down the key on the counter, I was so sad. Will Spencer run outside and stop Ash? Will Ash go on a drinking spree….Throw her self off a cliff? This sucks. Please update again soon.
