    Uh huh.

    Spencer fiddled on the couch waiting for Ashley to arrive. She was getting a little sick of these scenes where she had to tell people things. It made her shiver to think about what she was going to tell the little girl in the next room.

     

    ‘Daddy isn’t going to be around any more’

     

    Daddy was never around anyway.

     

    ‘Mommy doesn’t love daddy anymore’

     

    Because love can just fly away like that. Better hope it doesn’t happen to you.

     

    Jesus, what the hell was she going to tell Elly?

     

    The doorbell jarred angrily, jerking Spencer out of her thoughts and off the couch before she realized what the sound even was. She was halfway to the door in her pavlovian response when she realized that it must be Ashley. Her heart was still skipping beats when she opened the door. And there she was, leaning against the door frame with her hands in her pockets, cheeks red from the slight chill in the air. She was so beautiful she took Spencer’s breath away. Letting it catch in her throat the blonde stepped sideways, letting Ashley in the house.

     

    Busying herself making coffee Spencer tried not to connect eyes with the musician. The brunette’s intense stare somehow inveigled its way deep under her skin and manifested itself in ways that Spencer wasn’t entirely comfortable with. She slid Ashley’s coffee across the table to her and sat down, cradling her own warm cup and failing to meet those chocolate brown eyes that had such an effect on her.

     

    “Spence… do you want to talk about this?” Ashley’s voice was soft and caring but still didn’t bring Spencer to meet her eyes.

     

    “About what?” Spencer played for more time with ‘vague’.

     

    “Ok” the simplicity of the reply brought bright blue eyes up to meet serious brown ones. “How’s Elly?”

     

    It was the sudden return of thought to her daughter that sent Spencer over the edge. Soft, plump, salty tears welled up and spilled over, coursing a slick path down her cheek and gathering at her chin. In an instant, Ashley was beside her, one arm on the back of Spencer’s chair and the fingers on her other hand winding their way through Spencer’s now shaky digits. Spencer let go off Ashley’s hand and sniffed as she wiped the tears off her cheeks and pushed back. Grabbing Ashley’s arm she led the confused brunette to the couch, sat her down and pulled a pillow to her chest, hugging it close for safety.

    1. Argh…this is going to be a bit of a mess. Definitely a tough dilemma. Elly is concern numero uno. And she was right to tell Ashley she didn’t leave Gray for her; because she didn’t. Ashley is the catalyst for Spencer’s quest for happiness. This is a good thing. However, these two have delved beyond the friendship level. At this point, Ashley is going to have to be just the friend, not the lover. That doesn;t mean they can’t be in the future, but it seems right now Spencer has to get her life organized. This is a huge situation! I mean, is divorce on the horizon, a separation, what? I am a firm believer in love and timing. The love can always be there, but the timing has to be right. Ash and Spencer could definitely be together. They have a strong bond and the sexual attraction and desire is overtly strong and very beautiful. You can’t pass that up in life…it will just have to be put on hold, as Spencer gets her life on track. Ash will be there for her, and yes, I think they can be intimiate physically from time to time, but this cannot interfere with Elly’s need for stability with her mother and her coming to terms with a lack of father. In time, she will understand. Not to mention Elly really digs Ash. All is not lost, however poor Spence is a mess right now and needs a FRIEND, not a lover. If Ashley wants it, she can wait. If Spencer wants it, she will press forward.Awesome update, Sarah, although I am worried about what’s to come next with their relationship. But, yay for Spencer taking control and wanting to give herself and her daughter a better life!!

    9. okay, so you have a frowning/pouting Bannerman on your hands – look what you’ve done!! As usual I love the story, love the interaction between the characters, think Ash is possibly even hotter in this story than she is in the real SON, and hope that you write more very soon to ease my disappointment with Spencer’s words. Can’t be with Ashley, my arse! Oh, and I think Elly will be okay – she’s more mature than her father, after all! Please rectify the mess… please… I’d bribe you but have no real ideas of what to propose – I’m open for discussion on that one, though :-)

You make it complex and layered and so believable. You’re an awesome writer and I love love love how quickly you (usually) update your fics. You really are a machine. Keep it up because you know we all love it!!!!!!

Too many stories would’ve had Spence/Ash get together right after Spencer left Gray. But I like how Spencer is still confused and most of all she’s concerned about her daughter. How are you going to tell you’re daughter that her dad just left? And I can see why Spencer thinks she can’t to be with Ashley because how will this affect her daughter?
