They were tired of this.
‘They’ being, of course, Spencer’s shoes, and ‘this’ being the unyielding mistreatment that they seemed to be going through, lately. As if they weren’t worn down enough from the past two years, the blonde had been shuffling them along the sidewalk much more often than usual, and it was beginning to dawn on the sneakers that they might not last much longer. In fact, they were so worn that the leather had gone soft and the creases from bending had even faded, leaving faint, scraggling marks that were only very slightly lighter than the rest of the shoe. They fit her almost like socks, now, only just barely able to protect her feet from the elements and the dangers of foot-to-ground contact.
And they were tired of it.
The recent activity that had been the cause of so much shoe-requiring movement was simply Spencer transporting herself from place-to-place on foot. Strangely enough, she often ended up walking in all the same directions and making all the same stops and turns, always turning up at the same place. Of course, it all seemed in vain once the shoes realized she had simply turned around and began to walk back every time she reached the place, only pausing for a few seconds to peek inside. They deemed the actions pointless, only serving to wear down the old pair of shoes. It would have been a little more purposeful to them if she would at least jog, but she merely walked, often more than once a day. And still they found it to be a complete and utter waste of time and soles.
Spencer would have almost agreed with them, but she believed that there was some justification to her actions, and swore that her odd behavior was not driven by the wish to more rapidly destroy her shoes. That was simply an unfortunate aftereffect; one that really couldn’t be much helped. Rather, the girl told herself – and, strangely enough, her shoes – that she simply needed to keep checking. Eventually, Ashley would be there.
But she never was.
She hadn’t been there for nearly two weeks; since the day they went to buy new coffee pots together and chatted about their childhood toys. Twelve days, in fact, and in that time, Spencer hadn’t set a single worn sneaker-covered foot into the infamous Farley Bakery. The only people she ever saw inside – aside from any dwindling number of customers and regulars – were the new girl and a guy that hung around her nearly every minute of the day. Or, as far as she could tell, at least.

aahh, I missed you! And the update was definitely worth the wait, but I seriously cannot wait until Ashley finds out that Spencer is well… Spencer. Not ‘Emily’. Hah!
I think you’ll find I’m a reformed character and have become a – wait for it… frequent poster! Mental or what?! It’s weird you posted today cos I was actually wondering where the hell you’d vanished to… even went as far as to find your last post to see how long it’d been. It’s been a long time… you should be ashamed. Anyway, loving this story, can’t wait for the shit to hit the fan – I was just waiting for Paula to come out and have a go at Spencer, only for Ash to hear her real name isn’t emily! more more more! please?! Jx

So I was walking around the kitchen while I waited for the fanfic listing page to load (ugh, visiting my parents always entails dial-up internet) and when I saw that you had posted I walked straight into the table. Painful? Yes, but if your inanimate object stories have taught me anything, the table is probably pretty sore too. Point is, I love your story and this was a great update. Looking forward to the next one

sweet! an update… i’d been thinking about this guy one for a while now, so thank you! i have a feeling that kyla might figure out spence’s secret before ashley? but ahh, i’m probably way off. just one more guess among many possibilities. spencer is so intriguing, but i understand her infatuation completely. I sympathise with the possum babies but I love this story too much and neeeeeeeeeed an update. Please soon! Can’t wait for Spencer to just be Spencer again.
