Decoy – (Chapter: Broken Glasses, Whispered Words)

I’d like to say that something has changed, but no, everything is exactly the same. Well… almost everything. Other than the fact that I have some newly acquired cuts and bruises, I’m still the broken girl who can’t stick up for herself. The girl who nods her head as he whispers his apologies in my ear. The girl who lets his rough hands run down the length of my bruised flesh just because he thinks it’s comforting.

I haven’t seen Ashley in weeks, and I doubt I ever will. But honestly, I can’t say I’m completely upset by that fact. Really, what did she ever do for me? I mean, other than whisper things in my ear that I know could never be true.

But that doesn’t stop me from thinking of her, thinking of her whispered words.

    *************

    "Hey."

The sound floats around me for a moment before I realize the voice must be addressing me. Seeing as how the alcoholic, and Aiden are on ‘business’ in Vegas for the week. Blue eyes meet chocolate brown for a brief second. Almost instantly they return to the book in front of me.

    "Hi."

The unmistakable sound of footsteps moving closer fills my ears. Moments later the right side of the bed sinks down. I clutch the book tightly in between my hands. Thumbs nervously tapping the glossy front cover.

    "What’re you reading?"

I stare down at the cover of the book. Somehow this woman has managed to frazzle me enough to make me forget the title of a book I’ve been reading for weeks. Eyes continuously run over the green letters in an attempt to combine them to form something coherent.

    "Uh… 3rd… Degree."

I manage to say with my eyes still completely focused on the book. She mumbles a sound of understanding. The bed squeaks as she shifts around. Out of my peripheral vision, I see her scoot closer to me. The warmth of her body heat invades my senses.
