So Sorry I Scratched that Seven Year Itch…23

Tinas inclination was to pay Bette back ***** for tat for all that sexual teasing that she had endured from Bette. Bette was not made more comfortable until she was literally begging for release. Tina loved being in that much control of Bette and Bette had to admit that by allowing Tina that much control, new doors were being opened to their personal relationship. They ended up spending the rest of the day at home. They unloaded Tinas belongings from the car and then put everything away. It felt so good just being home, in their house together, that neither one wanted to go back out.

Tina cooked a wonderful dinner, and then they sat by the pool, sipping wine and quietly talking. Not a moment passed that one of them did not touch some part of the other. They just couldnt get enough of each other. There wasnt enough time, enough talking or enough touching. They would stop right in the middle of a sentence to share a kiss, a hug, or just a touch and soulful glance. The day ended without the subject of Candace being raised again.

    ~~

The weeks flew by and every day was another day to rediscover their love. They didnt agree on everything and they both got stressed out about work. But each evening they talked, sharing every detail of any problem that arose. Above all else, they wanted their emotional foundation to stay solid.

They had several appointments together with Dan Foxworthy and he taught them how to talk to each other, how to express their emotions, and to not keep things bottled up inside. With his help, they learned a new trust for each other. Bette was able to verbalize everything she had been suppressing; how distanced she had felt from Tina, and why she had felt that she couldnt express her fears to Tina. Meanwhile, Tina was able to relate her feeling of losing her own individuality, her fears of dependency, the ensuing reactions she had to those fears, and how that had helped distance her from Bette and Bette from her.

Bette discovered that by opening herself up to Tina, she did not lose anything. That in fact she gained, by not having to handling everything alone. She discovered that by sharing her emotions and innermost thoughts with Tina, their souls were just connected that much more. She found that she could trust Tina to listen to everything, all her feelings of inadequacy, all her worries, and not be condemned for them. Instead Tina would help her build her self-confidence, thereby changing how she dealt with all the different aspects of her life. Tina helped change her outlook on life itself.

Tina discovered that she did not have to dissect every nuance of every situation and look for problems that didnt exist. She learned she did not have to solve every problem that she did find. Instead, problems could be discussed and solved together. She found that she did not have to reinforce her independence, that it was ok to occasionally depend upon the person you chose to share your life with, and in fact it was rewarding to do so. She was able to realize the fact that she too, had keep emotions bottled up inside and had only allowed Bette to see the parts of her that she wished to share.

Bette discovered Tina was a much stronger person than she had ever given her credit for being. That she herself was really the weak one in some situations and that it was ok for Tina to be the stronger one when Bette needed that.

Tina discovered how much Bette had changed for her. She discovered a side of Bette that she never knew existed, a kinder, sweeter, more caring and giving part that made her love for Bette grow even stronger.

But the main thing they realized was how much they wanted to remain together, to never allow anything or anyone, including themselves, to separate them again. They learned through all the problems they had endured, that in the end, their relationship and their love had only strengthened. They realized that it is seldom one partners fault that a relationship falls apart. That if you are not satisfied in your relationship, then you need to discuss the problems together to find a solution. That talking with others outside the relationship does not help to fix the problems. Without communicating with each other, the relationship is doomed to failure. That seeking, outside the relationship, what you are lacking in the relationship, is not the correct way to deal with your problems, for it only leads to the loss of trust and the eventual ending of the relationship.

They also learned that the physical aspect of their relationship was a very important part in the blending of their minds and souls. That if you dont have the intimacy, you are closing an important part of yourself off, and that can feed feelings of inadequacy on both parts, adding to the distance that will continue to build between you.

They learned that no matter how much they had thought that they were ready to start a family, they really had not been. They had made changes to their lives to prepare for the addition of a new little life, and they really had not been willing to make those changes. Tina had been resentful of giving up her job and Bette had not been ready to be the sole supporter of the family. They also knew that they still wanted a family and that when they were ready, things would be different. Tina would continue to work until she had to stop. Bette would be more involved, would be available for any situation that might crop up, because this would be her child too. They even discussed Bette carrying the child, but Tina really wanted to be the one to experience that.

They had come so far in a just a few short months. It was only after Bette had taken her second test for HIV and they had discovered that she still was not showing any signs of the virus, that Tina again mentioned going to see Candace.

Tee, I really dont want to see her. You know I told her I never wanted to see her again. I really dont think this is a good idea. Why would you want to see her anyway? It cant be something you really want to do, see the person who with my help almost tore our lives apart.

Bette, I have moved on. That is in our past. Neither of us is the same person we were before. But you did share something with this person, and she has a horrible virus that could eventually turn into AIDS. We still wont know for another two months if you have avoided contracting this virus or if it is lying dormant and will show up in the next test. I am scared to death for you. I can only imagine how she feels, knowing she actually has the virus. Also, I really would like to know about Yolonda and the baby. I pray they have not been infected by this virus.

Baby, you are just the most caring and forgiving person I have ever met. I will do this if it is really what you want.

    It is. Thanks Babe.

    ~~

Saturday morning, Bette and Tina got up, dressed and went to the Planet for breakfast. As they ate, Bette tried to get her courage up to do this thing Tina was asking of her. Luckily the gang were not out this morning, so they did not have to inform Tinas mother, A.K.A. Alice, of their plans.

After the third cup of coffee, Tina asked Babe, are you ready to go yet?

Yeah Tee, just let me finish this cup. *****! Time had run out. They were actually going to Candaces house! Bette couldnt stall any longer. She finished her coffee and with a huge sigh, got up and pulled Tinas chair out so she could get up. I guess Im ready.

Tina laughed at the look on Bettes face. You would have thought she was having toothpicks shoved under her nails. You know Babe, if it bothers you this much, I could go by myself.

No Baby, if this is what you want to do, I will be right beside you.

About ten minutes later they turned onto Candaces street. A police car and an ambulance blocked their way. As they watched, a stretcher was wheeled out the front door of Candaces house and loaded onto the ambulance. Then a woman, the one who had accompanied Candace to the Provocations opening, came out the front door, locked it and ran to the ambulance, getting into the passengers seat. The ambulance took off with the police car leading the way. Both vehicles had lights and sirens going.

    1. Fantastic story, very imaginative. I really like the fact thet Bette doesn’t want to go see Candace but Tina is standing her ground. Very nice plot twist at the end….great job.

    2. As a person who’s of mixed race, I can honestly say that I don’t find any racism in your story, nor do I see any hatred for any race or person for that matter (well, Bette hates herself for having potentially destroyed her relationship with Tina, but that’s a given). I wonder if either Sistah4u or Scarlettatl even read the previous chapters that lead up to Candace’s HIV discovery? From the comments they each left I would suspect no.

Lizard, I think you have done a fine job with this story and with portraying an aspect of HIV—since I don’t have in depth knowledge about the disease or don’t know anyone who has suffered from it, I can’t speak about any other aspect that involves being HIV positive, but I do appreciate you researching the information for us. I hope you don’t take these two folks’ criticisms to heart; just read all the other comments posted on this and the other chapters to see who your real fans are.

    3. Just because no one mentioned it in another fanfic doesn’t mean lizard’s story is racist. I think it is a creative way to bring out a “controversial” topic. As far as contracting the disease woman to woman, it’s possible. I hope this story gets people thinking. Getting checked for the disease before you enter into a monagamous relationship and practicing safe sex can keep you and the ladies you love safe from the risk. I find it interesting that some people consider giving candice HIV racist. The disease comes up as a plot twist because Candice was an affair and Bette didn’t use protection, at least as far as I could see and I was watching (drooling) pretty close to the tv during the cheating.

I read a lot about HIV, my mother contracted the virus three years ago, and when lizard first started this series I was nervous that it would be just a plot curve without much information or sensitivity, but this has been the complete opposite. And Lizard is not just leaving us hanging as to Candice, she is having Bette and Tina come back into her life.

    4. Just out of curiosity, did you guys read the whole story or just this post?
I’ve left comments on other fanfics about racism before, but I just don’t see it in this writer’s story.
As to Chae’s comment about Candace not having risky behavior, let me remind you that unprotected sex is RISKY BEHAVIOR. How is it “ignorance” to have a character in a fanfic have a disease?
There have been episodes of the L word itself that really pissed me off. Tina’s behavior was appalling when it came to using a black donor.
I said HIV knows know race because anyone can get it regardless or race, class, or creed, and regardless of sexual orientation. One of Lizard’s posts was entirely devoted to HIV information, and frankly to me that is important. I don’t want to see only fluffy feel good fics.
Why do you feel Candace got HIV in this story because of her race? And as a side note, people can live for decades without getting Aids so Candace better be okay in this story.

    5. And one more thing Chae, as to this comment “To truly make Candace ‘bad’ …’ HIV is not a punishment. It’s a communicable disease, like a cold. We don’t blame people for getting sick with a cold. We don’t say, you are a bad person for engaging in risky behavior and standing next to that sneezer, so why do people think only bad people or people who do bad things get hiv. It does not descriminate. I wonder how many people out there have had unprotected sex. You all stood near that sneezer. It doesn’t make people bad.

    6. scarlettatl. DON’T CALL ME A CLOWN> I LIVE WITH HIV EVERY FUCKING DAY> THAT FUCKING DISEASE LIVES INSIDE OF MY MOTHER. WHAT THE FUCK DO YOU KNOW? I thank you lizard for taking the time to post information on HIV in a creative way.

    7. As I read this drown-out, sneer to writers, inconceivably poor excuse for an imagination, I am totally bored to tears. I would have more fun watching paint dry whether than reading about B/T’s piteous life. Even IC knew that. That’s why Candace came into the picture – to spice up Bette’s pathetic existance. Not only have you put me to sleep with B/T’s fancied bubblegum love affair, you have totally turned the Hot and Spicy L Word into a HIV/AIDS awareness documnetary. No one wants to read about death and disease on a prime time cable soap opera. Give me a break! It’s a dramatic series not 60 mins.

I find it ironic that the only way you think Bette would get over Candace is by making her HIV positive and possibly dying. Go figure.

    8. Here’s a racy comment for all you who are adamantly and vehemently reading between the imaginary lines in this story: It appears that the L Word show isn’t the only one with an Angry Black Woman; this site has several of them, myself included! However, I’m incensed with the level of stupidity, that’s right, I done called your accusations stupid, with unfounded comments. If this story was about Jenny/Tim, and Marina confessed to being HIV positive, would you all be in the same uproar! Would you lambaste the author in equal ferocity, accuse her of hating Europeans for making Marina contract HIV? I don’t think so. So, why in the hell are you interpreting racism when it was clearly not Lizard’s intention? I imagine she’s just some a white lady (no offense Lizard, I’m trying to prove a point with some humor ;-)), who probably had nary a thought to race when she conceived the story, let alone the plot twist. If anything she could be found guilty of with the HIV twist is contrivance, but that is about all you’d find after having read the entire 23 chapters of the story. If you can’t see this, then I would venture to assume you all are so busy fighting against the “Man,” you see the oppressor in anyone. Give it f**king rest people!

To loosely quote “Undercover Brother”: Sistah girl, you gots to keep it real.

      Flame away.

    9. Lizard, I posted to you in the begining about being careful to Candice and throughout your fanfic, I have felt you have been really enlightning and informative. I know race was not the reason you gave Candice HIV. HIV doesn’t see race. You gave Candice the disease because it mad interesting fiction. I have read some racist stories on here, but this is not one of them. You had B and T going to see if they could help candice in any way…. I think maybe Sistah and Scarlette just felt like starting a “provocations” debate. Any discussion is good discussion. Let’s talk it out. Keep writing.
