    Lights Out (Halloween Challenge)

Bette walked slowly up the stairs, putting distance between herself and the party going on below. She just wasn’t in the mood for socializing. She went into her bedroom and shut the door, closing out the music and laughter downstairs. Kicking off her shoes, she sat down on the bed for a moment and closed her eyes. She would love to just take a hot shower and crawl into bed. They weren’t going to miss her at the party anyway.

It had been Tina’s idea to have their friends over for an impromptu Halloween party. Claiming that everyone had been down too much lately and needed to lighten up, Tina had taken it upon herself to gather their group together and invite some people she knew from work over to hang out. The music was loud, the smoke was heavy, and the chocolatey-hemp smell of Alice’s special brownies baking had made Bette feel sick.

Bette went into the en-suite bathroom and splashed her face off with cold water and stared at her reflection as she held first one wrist, then the other, under the faucet. She looked as tired as she felt. She leaned closer and scrutinized a faint wrinkle under her eye. Was that new? She turned her face this way and that, looking for any other unwanted lines. The lights above the mirror flickered and Bette glanced at them with a frown. That was weird. The overhead light hadn’t flickered at all. She waited a moment to see if the lights would flicker again, but they didn’t. She shut off the water and dried her face and hands, wondering if it was a wiring problem. She straightened the towel on the rack and her hand was on the doorknob when the lights went out altogether, eliciting a gasp from Bette. She opened the door. The bedroom light was still on. It wasn’t the whole house, just the bathroom lights that were on the fritz, apparently. She’d have to talk to Tina about calling an electrician tomorrow.

She heard a peal of laughter from downstairs and went to her closet with a sigh, looking for a pair of more comfortable shoes. She slipped on a pair of flats and crossed the room to retrieve her heels from beside the bed. She saw something in her peripheral vision and turned back toward the closet. Bette froze, unsure of what she had just seen.

    1. I’ll forgive you for that O’Malley because it IS Halloween and you DO write well…. at first I thought the child laughing was her and Tina’s son’s spirit or something… then i was hoping it was Dana but no– it was creepy Jenny back from the crypt. :)
