After lunch, Bette had said that she’d had a lovely time, but she had a lot of work to do, so Tina left her to it. That was when Bette grabbed her coat, and went to sit in her car. She thought of Helena, of their past relationship, and how she felt about that. She thought about who she used to be, and who she felt Helena had changed her into. Doubt filled her entirely, drowning her.

    “Hey, neighbour.”

Bette jumped at the voice, slowly relaxing as she saw Bette leaning down with her usual smile. “Shane … hi.”

“Someone forgot her books,” she teased, holding Tina’s backpack up so that Bette could see it. “So uh … where’re you off to?” She leaned onto the car door, folding her arms over the opened window.

Bette knew she couldn’t hide her destination, even though Shane would likely try to talk her out of going. “Umm … Helena, actually. I’m going to see Helena.” She said it as if she were walking to her death.

“Hmm,” Shane nodded, weighing her options. She knew there was no use in trying to persuade Bette not to go alone, and Bette needed it. She needed to stand up to Helena – Shane just hoped that she could. “The Hell. Should be fun … well, I know Tina’ll be back for her bag. Can I wait outside your house?”

“I’m not gonna make you do that,” Bette laughed.

    “I asked, didn’t I?”

“… Yeah,” Bette smiled, gripping her hands onto the steering wheel. “Shane, you’re the best. Really.”

“I’ll read. It’ll be great. Maybe I can even talk to this crazy woman who’s flipped your world upside down, huh.”

“My uh … I’ll keep my phone on in case she needs to talk to me. I don’t know what’ll happen exactly, but … I need to do this.”

Shane nodded, “Yeah, stay strong, okay?”

Bette smiled. “Do or die, right?”

“Are those your options?” Shane teased, already walking up towards Bette’s porch. She was laughing as she climbed the steps, looking back to watch Bette reverse down to the street.

“Bye! And thanks!” Bette shouted back, waving as she headed off to Helena’s mother’s house. It was more a mansion than a simple house, but she didn’t let size intimidate her. She marched right up to the door after she’d parked, and rang the bell.

    1. Ladies, there are some many positive and negative emotions enacted in this story that it would probably require me to write a thesis on each character. I am not about to do that here unless GrindRight wants to give me extra credit for my work. (LOL.) So I’ll start with Bette. I believe she lacks Self-Love.Self-love can be taught in childhood through honesty, acceptance and unconditional love. Since most parents have their own self-doubts and limiting beliefs, they project these onto their children and the cycles of self-rejection and self-abuse repeat themselves. Maybe this is her reason for getting involved with Helena.

    2. Dylan’s analogy was dead on. I am curious as to what made Bette and Helena’s relationship so toxic. Brilliant as usual OG ; ) seeing Bette as you’ve written may be a tough read for some but I can’t wait to read how she rises above this. Women who find their own strength is a favorite read for me, so thank you ; )

    3. Wow GR! I just managed to catch up, and boy!! You blow me away with this story! Amazing writing! I think this is the first time I ever read a story where Bette is such a mess and somehow I still eager to find out what will happen next and the development of each character is so deep and the complexity is making the story so attractive . And even though I am not an expert in psychology but your character makes me think and wondering… ;-) lol … Let me remind me it’s FF only!! :-D anyway… thanks again GR ;-)

    4. Ok I though Helena was insane but now I think she is beyond mental. Get mentality is one of a crazy person. I don’t get why she thinks she can play these game that she finds so apparently amusing. When in fact they are damn right demeaning, inhuman and down right manipulative. I hope she does get the help she needs not like I like get much for the years of confusion and mental breakdown she has caused for Bette. I hope Bette realises that whatever Helena says is to hurt her until she has no choice but to believe what she says, and will go running back to the sordid witch. Tina is in it for the long haul I just hope she realises how deep Tina’s love penetrates. Before she crumbles and finds herself alone with nothing put Helena’s bitter words.

    5. Im intrigued that you put Dylan for the unlikely rescue, complicated but understandable situation. And relieved that Helena would finally being persuaded into some help and may leave Tina/Better alone before they alll sort out their dispute and problems. Always looking forward to ur stories, thanks
