    “T?”

“Hmm?” Tina’s eyes were moving across the page uninterrupted. When Bette didn’t answer, she propped her reading glasses into her hair and looked up. “What is it, babe?”

    “It’s the 22nd.”

    “Yes…”

Bette blinked. “The 22nd of December.”

Tina tilted her head with an expectant look on her face. “And…?”

“Are you really going to act like you don’t know what I’m getting at here?”

Tina put her glasses back on and returned to her book. “When you’re ready to tell me, let me know.”

    “T.”

With annoyance, Tina looked over the top of her glasses at Bette. “I’m trying to read.”

    “It’s almost Christmas, T.”

    “So?”

“There’s no tree! You’re not baking! I’m not being subconsciously annoyed by recurring Christmas songs you’ve been singing around the house, playing in the car, and humming in the shower!” Bette threw her hands up. “What gives?”

Tina shrugged and took her glasses off again. “I’m not in the mood, I guess. I wrapped the gifts we bought for Angie; they’re waiting in the closet. We’ll get a little table top tree and line them up on the coffee table. She doesn’t mind. She hasn’t even mentioned it. Kid stays buried in her phone these days anyway.” Tina’s eyes strayed to her book and she awaited Bette’s response. “Okay?” she prompted, seemingly wanting the subject closed so she could get back to her reading.

    “No.”

It was Tina’s turn to blink with a blank expression. “No, what?”

“It’s not okay. This isn’t the first time I’ve brought it up. You wouldn’t talk about it last week, either. Or the week before that.”

“Possibly because there’s nothing to say.”

Bette made a skeptical face. “You love Christmas.”

    “I’ve outgrown it.”

“Not likely. And why now, and not five or ten years ago, back when you used to press me to get into the holidays?”

Tina’s smile was wry as she said, “I suppose your wet blanket nature finally snuffed out the flame of my Christmas spirit. Congrats.”

“Hey!” Bette said to Tina’s laughing response. “Not fair! I’ve grown very tolerant over the years, you know. I even started to have fun with it.”
