Ashley’s sly smile came with ease as she nodded. “A few, yeah. Nothing major, though. Just out with my buddies.”
Yeah, fuck buddies. Spencer had to stop the frown that resulted from the invading thought, but knew it was probably true. Still, she kept a smile, nodding, and decided a change of subject was in order before she did anything she might regret. “So, um…who’s the new girl?” she inquired, nodding in the direction of apron-girl.
Ashley looked up from her coffee to glance at the girl before smiling, seeming to ignore Spencer’s question as she called her over. “Hey, Kyla! Come here for a second!”
Inwardly, Spencer panicked. Excellent job. This was probably another one of Ashley’s ‘buddies.’ Fantastic subject change, Spence.
Meanwhile, Kyla had walked over and Ashley introduced them. “Kyla, this is my friend Emily, and Emily, this is Kyla, my half-sister.”
…Oh.
Kyla smiled, reaching out and shaking Spencer’s hand in a friendly manner, and the blonde shook back, albeit nervously. What a stupid mistake. She’d known that Kyla was the name of Ashley’s half-sister. What was with the panic attack?
The two exchanged the mandatory ‘It’s nice to meet you’ before Kyla reminded Ashley of the work that needed to be done as she went back to the counter. Ashley only snorted slightly, before leaning in and muttering, “I don’t know why we even bother, with so little customers.” The two shared a laugh, which took a small load off of Spencer’s shoulders and allowed her to relax a little more.
Convincing herself that it was to make up for the past two weeks that she’d gone without seeing Ashley, Spencer made it a point to hang around the bakery all day. There were no protests, and the two sat at the table and talked comfortably the entire time. Just as well, Ashley ensured that she wouldn’t lose the blonde’s number this time, writing it on the corner of a napkin and sticking in into her pocket, then doing the same with her own number and giving it to Spencer.

aahh, I missed you! And the update was definitely worth the wait, but I seriously cannot wait until Ashley finds out that Spencer is well… Spencer. Not ‘Emily’. Hah!
I think you’ll find I’m a reformed character and have become a – wait for it… frequent poster! Mental or what?! It’s weird you posted today cos I was actually wondering where the hell you’d vanished to… even went as far as to find your last post to see how long it’d been. It’s been a long time… you should be ashamed. Anyway, loving this story, can’t wait for the shit to hit the fan – I was just waiting for Paula to come out and have a go at Spencer, only for Ash to hear her real name isn’t emily! more more more! please?! Jx

So I was walking around the kitchen while I waited for the fanfic listing page to load (ugh, visiting my parents always entails dial-up internet) and when I saw that you had posted I walked straight into the table. Painful? Yes, but if your inanimate object stories have taught me anything, the table is probably pretty sore too. Point is, I love your story and this was a great update. Looking forward to the next one

sweet! an update… i’d been thinking about this guy one for a while now, so thank you! i have a feeling that kyla might figure out spence’s secret before ashley? but ahh, i’m probably way off. just one more guess among many possibilities. spencer is so intriguing, but i understand her infatuation completely. I sympathise with the possum babies but I love this story too much and neeeeeeeeeed an update. Please soon! Can’t wait for Spencer to just be Spencer again.
