    Late night in the office… yes another one

    “Oh!” Spencer exclaimed.  “Hey Ashley!”

    She smiled at me genuinely and wandered over to her desk as Carrie waited for her by the door, looking at me suspiciously.

    “Hello,” I smiled in the calmest tone I could muster, eyeing Carrie as I pointedly flicked through the papers in my hands.

    “How are you,” Spencer asked after having retrieved whatever it was that she had obviously left behind after work.  She looked at me, her concern evident in her eyes as well as her voice.

    “I’m good, just catching up on what I missed,” I informed her, holding up the Coke folder.  “It looks great.”

    “Thank you,” she blushed, looking over to Carrie who was watching our exchange closely.

    “No need to thank me – I’m just making an honest observation,” I smiled, wishing Carrie would just fuck off and die.  Or maybe something less extreme.  No, sod it, I meant exactly what I thought!  I just wanted to show her that two could play at her little game with Spencer, who had succeeded in blushing an even darker shade.

    “Thanks… anyway I’d better be going,” she said, lifting her eyes in Carrie’s direction.  “You gonna come down with me?”

    “Sure,” Carrie said unenthusiastically, casting a dirty look in my direction and then heading back out in the direction of the elevator.

    “See you Monday?” Spencer suddenly asked me, sounding genuinely curious as to whether or not I’d be at work.

    “Sure will,” I told her, casually spinning the back of my chair to her and burying my head back in the paperwork.  She took her cue to leave and I found myself listening closely to her footsteps as she made her way down the corridor.  I strained to hear what she was saying to Carrie, but couldn’t quite make it out as the elevator doors closed, effectively killing their conversation.

    I sighed deeply and shoved the folder away from me, returning to the email I had so carefully written.  I frowned as I re-read the words, knowing it wouldn’t work.  They’d only end up asking Aiden about it, and he’d immediately know it was me that had done it.  I deleted the draft email and then quit ‘Mail’ altogether, eventually watching as the computer logged out and shut down.  I looked down at the Palm Top I had quickly discarded when Spencer and Carrie had entered the room, finally deciding that if I couldn’t get everyone to drop out of the bet, I’d at least remove the one bit of competition that I did have.  Scrolling through the list of names Aiden had stored, I finally found the evidence that my assumptions were correct.  Carrie was indeed in on the bet, and I was shocked to discover that her time to ‘woo’ Spencer started the exact same week as myself – Monday the 19th of March.  I sighed and returned to the main menu, switching the damn Palm Pilot off and shoving it back into Aiden’s drawer.  I wished I’d never gotten involved with PNG.  I guessed I’d got my comeuppance, though, as soon as it became apparent that Spencer was the subject.  What a cruel twist of fate.

    2. Erm…crap. That sounded like one of those “perfect plans” that always end up backfiring. So I predict: Spencer finds out somehow, there’s a ton of drama like always, then there’s some forgiving going on even though spencer won’t want to, annd then they’ll end up together. But that’s just how things always go. Maybe you’ll come up with something more interesting.

    6. Oh thank goodness Carrie doesn’t have a brain. I just hope that she doesn’t somehow magically grow one…the “ah well” she sighed out at end sounded slightly ominous. Maybe I’m just being paranoid? Either way, loved the post.
