I didn’t ponder the thought for long before Carrie’s phone started ringing from inside her bag that she had dumped down next to me. I beat her to it, and felt my stomach lurch at the sight of the caller ID. Spence.
“Answer it,” I told Carrie, “and put it on speaker phone!”
She did as was told, and soon Spencer’s voice was ringing out in the silence around us.
“Hi Spence’,” Carrie said, her voice clear and unwavering, her eyes watching the phone as it rested on her desk between us. I remained silent.
“Hey hon, you okay?” Spencer asked so sweetly it made me feel even sicker. I can feel my teeth rotting.
“Yeah, just at home,” she lied so easily it almost made me laugh.
“Ah okay… I just wondered if you wanted to come over for a meal later?” Spencer asked. I felt my blood boil, and stared down on Carrie before she looked up to meet my gaze. I narrowed my eyes and shook my head, Carrie quickly cottoning on.
“Sorry babe, I can’t,” Carrie said lightly.
“Oh, okay then, another time?”
The disappointment in Spencer’s voice devastated me. Why the hell was she so disappointed over Carrie not being able to go over!? This is fucking stupid! I could have screamed.
I tentatively reached down and covered the mouthpiece of the phone. “Tell her you’re leaving,” I growled.
She looked at me as if to say “What?”, although quickly conceded with a nod and I removed my hand from the phone.
“Actually, Spence, I kind of need to talk to you about something,” Carrie began as I dug my hands into my pockets.
“Is everything all right?” Spencer asked, suddenly sounding worried and concerned and a whole load of other emotions I didn’t want her to feel towards Carrie.
“Well… no. I found out just now that I’ve gotta leave work -”
“What? How come?” Spencer cut her off.
“I can’t really talk about it, but, all I know is I have to leave immediately, and I won’t be coming back,” Carrie sighed, struggling with the words but not the emotion. I could see in her eyes that she didn’t really give a crap about how Spencer gasped on the other end of the line, how she was breathing a little heavier, how she was so blatantly trying not to get too angry or too sad to continue with the call. Carrie just didn’t care… but I did. I figured that maybe Carrie didn’t even know Spencer enough to recognise the signals, and there I was, even able to recognise them over the damned phone!
“Oh… but we’ll still see each other, right?” Spencer asked timidly.
I glared at Carrie, and knew she understood.
“I’m sorry, babe, but I don’t think so,” she sighed.
The line suddenly went dead and, as much as I felt bad that Spencer felt bad, I was fucking delighted at the most recent turn of events. I tried not to smile too much as Carrie put her phone back in her bag and looked back up at the computer screen to continue with her letter of resignation.
“It’s funny, but I don’t really care,” Carrie laughed. I could have hit her, but her words didn’t surprise me in any way at all. Carrie only cared about herself. “It was only ever about the money… like it is for you and everyone else here.”
Actually, Carrie only cares about herself… and money.
“Twenty grand would have cleared all my debts,” she sighed. “Ah well.”
Wait for me to get out the frigging violins, why don’t you!?
As Carrie put the last few final touches to the letter of resignation and sent it to the printer, I smiled. I’d really gotten away with it.

she got away with it….for now. but everything has a way of catching up with us. its only a matter of time. ha i sound like spashley hater, im not i swear. i was just saying haha. anyways brilliant, as you always are. cant wait for another update :]
Erm…crap. That sounded like one of those “perfect plans” that always end up backfiring. So I predict: Spencer finds out somehow, there’s a ton of drama like always, then there’s some forgiving going on even though spencer won’t want to, annd then they’ll end up together. But that’s just how things always go. Maybe you’ll come up with something more interesting.

Oh thank goodness Carrie doesn’t have a brain. I just hope that she doesn’t somehow magically grow one…the “ah well” she sighed out at end sounded slightly ominous. Maybe I’m just being paranoid? Either way, loved the post.
