Project New Girl – (Chapter: Score)

“Any of you folks seen Carrie?” he asked, looking in Spencer’s direction as he addressed the room.  She just returned her nose to her keyboard and left the question unanswered.

“Not this morning, no,” I spoke for everyone.

“She’s not been in,” Ed piped up from behind his morning paper.

“And her desk was already cleared when we got here,” Aiden said, his mouth full of toast.

“Oh,” Julian conceded.  “I want a coffee.”

“Having trouble finding the kitchen?” I asked, earning a snicker from my colleagues.

“You’re funny, Davies,” Julian smirked, but winked at me anyway.  I loved that I could get away with all the shit I gave him.  “But no – I know perfectly well where the kitchen is – it’s where Carrie used to return from whenever she brought me drinks.”

“Today must be a real blow to you, then,” Ed laughed, earning himself a pen in the face as Julian flinged it at him from across the room.  He managed to deflect it, though, with the broadsheet in his hands, and quickly buried his red face back in its inky pages.

    “She’s vanished,” Julian sighed.

“Maybe she left you a memo or something?” I suggested, knowing full well that if he looked on his desk, just to the left of his cigar box, he’d see a DJC letter headed sheet with a poor excuse for a resignation typed neatly upon it, signed by the conniving hand of Carrie.

“I’ll go see,” Julian grunted, swiftly leaving the room.  His exit left the office feeling much larger, as his presence was naturally demanding and commanding, taking up a lot of room.  Despite being a prick, he had an annoying aura around him that seemed to incessantly attract attention.  His presence wasn’t missed for long, however, when his voice suddenly filled the air with a stream of expletives that were, in the main, unrepeatable.  Soon he returned to the office, brandishing the offending item.

“… fucking left, with no reason and after giving no fucking notice,” he cried, enunciating the last few words with a stab of the paper in his left hand with the extended index finger of his right.  We all stared at him, waiting for his head to explode.

“Actually, I seem to remember her mentioning a family problem, or something,” I spoke out, my voice crossing the no man’s land between our desks and monster that he had become in the doorway.  He resembled the Hulk.  Spencer’s eyes darted in my direction, burning right through me – she looked furious, and I didn’t blame her.  I would have been pissed too if I discovered that my friend had told someone that they didn’t even like some important information that they hadn’t even bothered to tell me before they upped and left.
